About

Hello, my name is Michelle Matlock and I am the founder of Circle UP Productions (CUP). CUP is dedicated to bringing marvelous entertainment and Performance Workshops to Downtown Tacoma and surrounding areas.

I have been acting and performing for as long as I can remember. My first professional gig was at the Pantages Theater in Tacoma when I was eleven years old. I went on to study theater at Western Washington University and then I graduated from the National Shakespeare Conservatory in New York City.

Most recently I created and performed the role of "Ladybug" for Cirque du Soleil's touring show OVO. After 10 years on the road with that show I have recently returned to my hometown of Tacoma and am now producing, directing and teaching in the area.

I spent 15 years in New York teaching after school acting programs, clowning worshops and one on one coaching for auditions, solo shows and basic techniques for performance.

I love working with actors of all ages. My focus is to always identify my students raw talent, then challenge them to discover all the possibilities there are to acheive their goals. I use theater games and clown techniques to help performers hone their craft. I enjoy seeing my students develop and grow their skills as performers.

I've taught acting and clowning for a variety of companies including Cirque du Soleil, Big Apple Circus (NY), Royal Caribbean Cruises, Circus Minimus (NY), Children's Aid Society (NY), Village Academy (NY, Find Your Passion Program), Island School (NY) and a myriad of private lessons along the way.

Please visit my website to discover more about my work and accomplishments in the entertainment industry.

Michelles workshop at the Ko Festival was memorable and though it was now many years ago, projects that students generated there still have a life. Laurie McCants started what has now become the show INDUSTRIOUS ANGELS in Michelles workshop. Just closed a run of the show last week. Without Michelles encouragement and inspiration -- not to mention craft, well, this project might never have happened. Michelle is truly talented and great to work with. Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed Juggle Jam! It was an activity that my kids and I could do together, and had a great time! It wasnt only juggling, but additional activities that we were able to try - there was even a special guest! Keep the workshops coming, please.

Michelle is a true professional in every sense of the word. Super talented yet very humble, she is a force to reckon with both on and off the stage. It was an honour and privlege to have the chance to perform, work, and learn from Michelle while on tour at Cirque du Soleil. Rock on Michelle!!!!!

The minute I started to work with Michelle, I was amazed by her talent, her intuition and her brilliant spirit. As an acting coach at Cirque du Soleil I witnessed her insight, strenght and capacity of adaptation through many years, as she played a main role in Ovo. It has been a real treat to re-create some sketches with her, as the show was later adapted for arena tour. At that moment Michelle was creative and right on point; a true anchor for re-writing with new partners. Being in the show business myself for 45 years now, I am totally confident that any project of her will be well prepared, truthful and successful.

I learn some skills that now I use everyday. It helped me understand better what is the role of a character on stage and what’s the storyline behind it. Michelle Matlock was a wonderful teacher. I will be forever grateful for what I learn with her. Being a clown it’s not only but being funny, but it’s being real on stage with appropriate feelings. With her, it was clear and fast learning.

    Frequently asked questions

I always begin with listening to the student's why, motivation and what goals they want to achieve with their lessons. This is a discussion where I listen most of the time.

Once I have an idea of the student's wants and desires, I create a personal lesson plan that will excercise every performance muscle and develop the skills that the student will need to achieve their goals.

    Western Washington University (Theater)

National Shakespeare Conservatory Graduate (Classical, Acting)

Studied with acting and clown masters: Joan Evans, Aitor Basauri, David Shiner, Fay Simpson to name a few.
