My son just started taking drum lessons a few weeks ago with Jack at Seattle Drum Studio. Jack has been easy to work with for scheduling, and my son actually enjoys practicing at home. I would highly recommend Jack to anyone looking for lessons.

Jack is super informative and I love his teaching style! He is very patient with me during my learning process. His passion for the drums is infectious! He also has a great personality so it was super enjoyable taking lessons from him. 10/10 would recommend!

Jack is awesome! He is funny and makes our drum lessons really enjoyable. I was recommended to him by a friend, and have been taking lessons for a little over a year.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I love working with new students as it gives me an opportunity to help them grow as musicians right away. If a student has never played music in the past, I start with some simple exercies to get them playing a simple drum beat.

For students who have some experience, I will ask them to play a few drum beats and fills for me so I can gauge their level and interests.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have been playing music since the 5th grade, when I started out on trumpet in the school band. I played all through middle and high school, and eventually studied music at the University of Kentucky. This was when I developed my love of drums and percussion.

Since that time I have studied privately with many teachers in Seattle, and have taken many drum camps with Mike Johnston. He provided mentorship and guidance to start my own teaching as well.

How did you get started teaching?

I started teaching in 2011 when I started Seattle Drum Studio. I was inspired to begin teaching by Mike Johnston of mikeslessons.com. Teaching others provides a way to pass on your own knowledge, and help others grow.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with students of all ages, from young children to retired adults. Many of my students are looking to pursue music in college and as a career, while others want a fun outlet for their creativity.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

My best piece of advice to anyone looking for private lessons is to find a teacher that you trust and get along with. Private lessons should be fun and promote a feeling of encouragement for the student.
