    Frequently asked questions

I love working with new students as it gives me an opportunity to help them grow as musicians right away. If a student has never played music in the past, I start with some simple exercies to get them playing a simple drum beat.

For students who have some experience, I will ask them to play a few drum beats and fills for me so I can gauge their level and interests.

I have been playing music since the 5th grade, when I started out on trumpet in the school band. I played all through middle and high school, and eventually studied music at the University of Kentucky. This was when I developed my love of drums and percussion.

Since that time I have studied privately with many teachers in Seattle, and have taken many drum camps with Mike Johnston. He provided mentorship and guidance to start my own teaching as well.

I started teaching in 2011 when I started Seattle Drum Studio. I was inspired to begin teaching by Mike Johnston of mikeslessons.com. Teaching others provides a way to pass on your own knowledge, and help others grow.

I have worked with students of all ages, from young children to retired adults. Many of my students are looking to pursue music in college and as a career, while others want a fun outlet for their creativity.

My best piece of advice to anyone looking for private lessons is to find a teacher that you trust and get along with. Private lessons should be fun and promote a feeling of encouragement for the student.
