Krysti C. says, "I have been going to guitar lessons with Dirk for over a year now. I tried guitar lessons once before -- and the instructor and I just didn't "click". I am a 38-year old woman, who loves to sing and have always wanted a way to accompany myself -- I love cheesy music (read: boring ballads) and have zero aspirations of being a rock star (although I have played at one open mic). Dirk has been the perfect instructor for me -- he is the right balance of helping you find inspiration in songs that you actually enjoy and also providing structure and exercises to increase your playing ability. He is fun, and patient, and supportive! He always has suggestions for songs that I may like -- and he's usually spot on! I'll also surprise him with songs that I want to try in lessons -- and he'll sit there and work them out with me on the spot. He's also been super patient with me -- as an adult learner, guitar obviously isn't my primary focus. Life gets in the way sometimes -- and Dirk has never once pushed. He has gently reminded me of my guitar goals in a way that is exactly what I need to get me on track when I have been distracted (sometimes missing 1-2 months of lessons). I drive 45 minutes from Arlington, VA to guitar lessons -- and I ALWAYS look forward to it (even when I'm embarrassed if I haven't practiced as much as I should have)! His joy for the instrument and music in general is infectious. If you want to pick up the guitar, definitely give Dirk a shot -- he's absolutely wonderful!" Read more

How many adult guitar lessons do I need?

  • How long have you been teaching guitar to adults?
  • Is it possible to try a lesson for free to see if your style resonates with me?
  • What kind of guitar would be suitable for me to buy?
  • Will you assign homework, and how much time should I devote to practicing?
  • What educational resources or books should I buy to aid my learning?
  • Which genres of guitar music are you best at?
  • Can you adjust your teaching style if I find a concept challenging to grasp?
  • What should I bring to class, and how long is each session?
  • Can I receive a copy of our lesson schedule and terms?

Brett Lemley keeps the lesson stress-free. As an adult learner, he keeps every week challenging at my level & provides helpful tips and review as necessary. I look very forward to my lesson every week. Taking up trumpet is an activity that I do to keep my brain working by learning something new and Brett makes the lesson an enriching experience. He makes definite effort to try to help the student with any sticking points.
