About

After ten years of studying music at the University level and earning four degrees including a doctorate, I strive particularly to offer students high quality Classical, operatic, and musical theatre training. I am well versed in the standard repertoire in these fields, and enjoy taking my students to statewide and out-of-state competitions to sing for other highly qualified teachers. I want to foster a passion for the classical genres of singing, and am glad to help students from high school to late adult ages. I particulary enjoy helping high school students with the college audition process, and navigating various in-state and out-of-state schools, going over in detail scholarship options, school programs, and helping them to find what they desire most out of an upper level music education.

Degrees Obtained:

Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance - Samford University (2009)

Masters of Music Education - Samford University (2010)

Master of Music in Voice and Opera - Northwestern University (2013)

Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance - The University of Alabama (2015)

I select my students by in-person audition.

I enjoy helping students find their best physical, mental and emotional abilities to perform. Through extensive training in breath management, proper alignment, release of tension, English and foreign language diction, and stylistic nuances of various genres, I like to help students create a musical experience with each piece assigned. Students can either treat music as "singing a song" or "performing a piece" - I like to help them achieve the latter in all aspects - text, music, and drama.

I enjoy helping students to finesse new languages. Students have the option of singing in the following languages, which I am well versed in the diction nuances of:

English, Latin, Italian, French, German, Russian, and more.

As an adult learner, it was important that I find a voice teacher who would challenge me but understand I wont be singing at Carnegie Hall. Dr. Sadie Goodman is a perfect teacher for my needs. She challenges me and has high expectations, but also makes the lessons fun. I have seen a remarkable improvement in the quality and range of my voice in the months I have been working with Sadie, which I attribute to her outstanding instruction and my hard work. I would highly recommend Dr. Goodman as a voice teacher.

Dr. Sadie Goodman has tremendously improved my vocal knowledge and technique. When I began working with her less than two years ago, I came from teachers that had pushed my voice in an unhealthy way. Looking for a more classical approach to singing, I found Dr. Goodman, and she has helped my vocal skills so much more than any teacher I had prior. She is kind and encouraging, but pushes me where I need it most. She expects a standard of me as a student that has perfectly prepared me for studying music in college. She has extensive knowledge of how the voice works, and it truly shows in my lessons. Dr. Goodman has a love for music that is obvious when she works with me, and I know that she cares for me as more than just a student. When I have auditions, she always texts or calls me to find out how they went, and she is just as excited as I am – if not more so – when I succeed. She is the most supportive person I have ever had the privilege of working with. Since beginning to work with her, I have been highly successful in my auditions, all of which is due to her teaching and guidance. I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Goodman, and I would highly recommend her as a voice teacher.

I have known Dr. Sadie Frazier Goodman for more than 15 years. I have watched her develop and train as a vocalist throughout those years. Dr. Goodman has been our daughter’s (Mason) voice teacher for the past four years. As Mason was growing up, her previous voice teacher advised us to seek a female voice teacher as her voice began to mature. Upon his advice, we sought out Dr. Goodman.
One of the very first things that we were pleased to hear from Dr. Goodman was her plan to teach Mason to sing in a manner in which she would not stress or strain her young voice. We had no idea what it meant to be classically trained but we did know that our daughter had a talent and we wanted it developed in the best possible way. Dr. Goodman was just what our daughter needed and more!
Dr. Goodman worked well with Mason, was patient and kind to her as she trained her to sing the correct way. But more than just training our daughter, she was a friend and a wonderful advisor and mentor. Dr. Goodman was genuinely and sincerely invested in Mason’s development as a vocalist. Dr. Goodman gave excellent advice and direction to Mason and to us, her parents, as we navigated this “new” world of classical singing and musical theatre.
Dr. Goodman’s dedication to our daughter has prepared her for a career in musical theatre or as a classical vocalist. Multiple colleges have reaffirmed Mason’s readiness (and even her advanced vocal abilities) for the next steps in college. Mason was perfectly prepared to walk into her college auditions and have a great showing! We could not have been at this place without Dr. Sadie Frazier Goodman!

Although I have studied voice and sung professionally for over ten years, I recently began to take lessons with a variety of voice teachers around the Southeast to try to get some extra help resolving tension issues. I was fortunate to have Sadie recommended to me by Stephen Smith of Northwestern University (who was recommended to me by Joyce DiDonato).
I found Sadie to be extremely helpful in diagnosing and correcting the problems which contributed to my tension issues. She has a thorough understanding of technique, explains concepts in a concise and easy to understand way, and is very creative in finding multiple different ways to approach issues. Sadie puts a lot of effort into her teaching, and she is also an encouraging and fun person to work with!
I highly recommend Sadie as a voice teacher! In my experience, she’s one of the best!

Frequently asked questions

When meeting new students I listen closely to their desires for furthering their musical education. Do they wish to win college scholarships? Do they wish to better contribute to their local community or church choir? Do they intend to audition for a musical theatre production? After I learn this, I am able to tailor the appropriate repertoire to a student's range, age, ability, and voice type. Then I will challenge students to increase their skills in breath management, clarity of diction, posture/alignment awareness, and tone production to produce a well-rounded performance, with the addition of emotion and drama.

I have seven years of experience teaching high school and college level students, both non-music and music mminors, and adults up to age 70. I have taught undergraduate students at The University of Alabama, had a student in the top 10 (semi-finalist) at the Miss Alabama pageant.

I was on faculty at Judson College for four years, and helped many students carry out successful recitals and auditions, including one student who won 3rd place for first year college women in the Alabama National Association of Teachers of Singing competition in 2017. I have also had high school students place in the ALANATS competition in the classical and musical theatre categories.

I am proud to have helped many high school students realize their dreams of being accepted into the music departments of the following colleges and universities: Lee University, Samford University, Belmont University, The University of Alabama, The University of Montevallo, Elon University, and Reinhardt College.

A recent student of mine gave a recital in November. For those 30 minutes, she wore a stunningly beautiful gown, and displayed all of her vocal talent, as well as the confidence gained from hard work and persistence in practice that we laid the foundation for in her weekly private lessons. Her family beamed with pride and happiness at seeing their daughter mature and take responsibility for her learning and betterment.

Choosing a voice teacher can be a daunting task. A student's private time with the teacher can be highly enriching if the student and teacher jive on an emotional and personal level, with the appropriate amount of give and take, challenge and encouragement from both parties. Parents and students should get along personably with the teacher, and fully trust the teacher to take the voice in hand to mold it into the most powerful and efficient instrument the student can manage.

What are your goals for lessons? Do you desire to win competitions, sing in a church choir, audition for college scholarships, audition for musical theatre shows, or do you merely wish to strengthen your knowledge and natural instrument? Who are your vocal models? Who do you want to sound like, or whose voice do you admire most? Knowing these answers will help you to figure out with your teacher how often you should have private voice lessons.
