Gregg Downey turned professional in 1986 after a successful collegiate career. Member of the Portland State Vikings Golf Team in 1981-86. Named team captain and achieved NCAA All-American status in 85’ & 86”. Winner of four collegiate tournaments and the 1986 Portland City Amateur Championship. Recognized as one of the Northwest's top Amateur golfers. Turned professional in 1986 to continued his play on various mini-tours home and abroad. In 1990 he turned his focus to teaching and learning more about the golf swing and how to communicate his understanding of the swing and playing abilities to his students. It is his success on the golf course that has motivated him to pass that passion for the game on to his students and help them enjoy their success on the golf course. Cause & Effect Golf is dedicated to identifying, focusing and understanding the root cause that can inhibit one’s ability to better golf. Improvement can be achieved by establishing a well-balanced step by step approach for the student. With the proper identification of the key movements and focusing on practice drills improvement can be achieved.
Golf is a great game that can be experienced by people of all levels. I have learned so much over the 40 years of playing and the teaching the game that it gives me a great thrill to pass that knowledge on to players. From working with beginners showing them how fun it is to the advance players that are playing competitively I love sharing my knowledge with each individual.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My first step is to understand what golf means to my student. Do they play once a week, once a month or once a year? Do they have goals or want to establish goals?
After I have a better understanding of my student then I decide how to proceed according to what we have discussed.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have played golf for over 40 years. I played in college before turning professional. I have learned golf through my experiences of playing and teaching along with my physcholgy studies. From the technical side to the mental side of golf I have played, performed, coached and studied golf and how to achieve success on the golf course.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My pricing is pretty simple.
$60 per 1 hour session. I discount my lessons $5 lesson for each prepaid lesson in advance. Exampl. (3) lessons for $165.
How did you get started teaching?
After many years of competition both amateur and professional I decided to turn my knowedge of the game over to the instructional side of golf. Golf is a very difficult game and I enjoy helping people learn the game. It can be a frustrating game so I try to help students enjoy the game.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with beginners of all ages on up to collegiate players and professionals.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
This summer one of my college students has once 3 amateur tournaments and was invited to play in a national amater event. Fun to see my players get recognizition for their hard work.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure there is a connection. Hard to know until after one lesson so be patient in your search. Ask questions in the hiring process to see if they can relate to your situation.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Familarize yourself with where you stand in golf. Be able to answer questions your instructor will ask you. Be honest of your thoughts and fears on the golf course. Full disclosure to your instructor helps the instructor properly assess what can be done and how to begin the process.
