Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I test to see how strong and flexible they are so I learn how far I am able to push this new student. It's important to have boundaries to avoid permanent physical damage or discouragement from going to hard too fast.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have trained at CF Dance for well over 5 years, at my high school, and received my vocational degree from Fullerton College.
I have also been in two professional dance companies: Vicious Circle Dance Company & Southern California Dance Academy
as for Colorguard, I started in high school and moved up to a professional Colorguard in college.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
due to being accustomed to training high school and elementary school students in poorer areas, I try not to be expensive. $11-$12 an hour works for me as long as dancers get to enjoy rehearsal.
How did you get started teaching?
In high school, students wanted to join the dance team, so after school I would train these freshman/sophomores so they'd have all the skills they'd need to make it to varsity within the schoolyear, and most of them did.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students with innate flexibility and no strength/dance training whatsoever, as well as students that were stiff as a brick before meeting me.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
An old student of mine recently went en pointe and graduated high school with a dance tassel.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Definitely make sure they know what they're talking about. If they don't know the muscles they're stretching, they shouldn't be stretching them. Anatomical basics are crucial to dancers health.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Any and all, students should always talk to their teachers about their needs. It helps teachers learn how to individualize their training more to properly meet their demands
