I help each student learn violin from beginner to advance level using various methods. Students also have opportunities to perform in studio recital every year, taking a level test such as CM, ASTACAP every year, competitions, and orchestra auditions, etc. I enjoy helping all my students to grow better violin/viola player and having good opportunities to perform! Minal S. says, "My daughter has been taking piano lessons with Ms. Elisa at the Yamaha Music Center in Irvine since kindergarten. She began in group lessons and has transitioned to private lessons, still with Ms. Elisa, her very first teacher. I cannot speak highly enough of Ms. Elisa; she is incredibly talented, dedicated, and inspiring. Her teaching style strikes a perfect balance between firm guidance and genuine care. Thanks to her nurturing and encouraging approach, my daughter has developed a deep love for piano. In all these years, not once has she expressed a desire to quit, a true testament to Ms. Elisa’s influence and support. Ms. Elisa goes above and beyond to keep my daughter motivated. She consistently challenges her with diverse musical pieces and encourages her to participate in piano competitions, always offering positive reinforcement regardless of the outcome. Under her guidance, my daughter has flourished, showing remarkable progress and growing confidence in her abilities. What stands out most is Ms. Elisa’s unwavering commitment. She keeps in regular contact with us, providing thoughtful updates on our daughter's development. Now in 8th grade, my daughter is preparing for an international piano competition. Ms. Elisa has been dedicating additional time, nearly two extra hours on Saturdays—outside of regular lessons to help her prepare. Her flexibility and dedication are truly admirable. We feel incredibly fortunate to have Ms. Elisa as our daughter’s piano teacher. She has played an important role in shaping her musical journey, and we are so grateful for her continued support and mentorship. (Minal Shah, mother of Trisha Shah)" Read more

Your Piano Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

I have been Mark's student since I was around sixth grade until just now. I recently just got my Senior Medallion for Certificate of Merit for piano after finishing level 8. Under his teaching, I've also obtained honorable mention trophies for Romantic Festival and Baroque Festival, a winner trophy for Latin Festival, as well as the 15 point and 30 point trophy at Junior Festival. Even with the mistakes I make from lack of practice, he's still reasonably patient with me and helps me to make sure I play the best I can. I have very much enjoyed being his student the past 7 years.

Catherine is very responsible and extremely helpful for my music theory study. She set up additional office hours to help me understand the knowledge and pass the advanced tonal practice course. Her introduction was very clear and she delivered it with great patience. She was also very thoughtful to be flexible to fit my schedule. I really appreciate her help, and would highly recommend her.

April is great!! My son has been in show choir for 3 years and It was my son’s first private lesson outside of choir. He has been struggling, having a hard time reaching some of the high notes and running out of air. April was able to identify the problem on his first lesson and explained it so well to him that he finally figured it out. She helped Noah how to improve and he was so excited about recognizing his mix voice. He couldn’t stop singing the songs he was having trouble with or scared to sing, it was like night and day. She also has great vocal exercises online for easy access from anywhere. Noah is excited and is looking forward to his next lesson!!! I also love the fact that she is nearby. Thanks April for giving him his confident back in singing those hard to reach note. I don’t know why I’d didn’t see a vocal coach for him sooner.
