I taught myself to play-by-ear. I now can teach others, this unique gift. I was playing professionally, before I had any training. My parents were advised to avoid stifling me with formal lessons. This caused me to passionately hunger for that formal education. And I put myself through music college as a result. I did very well, and with ease, because I already understood music, in practice. I believe in the concept that: We could get milk out of the refrigerator, before we could spell it. And we could say "refrigerator", before we could read the word. Why should music be any different?" Understanding what a refrigerator is, and why we need i

Other professionals who I know and worked with who told me they thought it was a great thing to do after 40-50 years in the business: To give it back. I think pros who move to teaching have a unique perspective on teaching philosophy and can help even more then career teachers.
What do you love most about your job?
The fact that I’ve a huge passion for jazz and improvised music. I played it all my life all over the world, and with some of the best people in the business. When I teach, I’m just as concerned with transmitting that passion as well as the actual information that I transmit.
What types of students have you worked with?
Mostly adults, and a few high school or college students. Some are serious amateurs some are aspiring pros. Many of them come to me frustrated, that curriculums in their schools don’t exist, or are at best inadequate. It a good feeling to be able to be there for them.
Tell us about your passion for teaching
My passion for teaching comes from my passion for music itself. I saw one of the great jazz artists, Thelonious Monk and his quartet perform when I was in high school. It was an epiphany for me. I never wanted anything else for my life, but to emulate his greatness as best I could in whatever ever I did as an artist, or a teacher.
What advice would you give aspiring students?
There are a million reasons to quit; only one to stick with it. Be sure and be honest with yourself about your prospects. Ask other people who are in the know, doing what you want. You must listen to recordings of the great masters. They are the ultimate teacher. I will teach you how to listen to them and what to listen for.
