Learning is more fun in groups, it just is!  As humans we learn best when we can "see, do and teach".  We observe, we imitate and then share what we learned.  In the Simply Music program we take this approach with learning music.  Students learn songs together, collaborate, support and often teach each other.   I've been teaching Simply Music since 2007 and have taken hundreds of students from the basics of piano to playing wonderfully complex classical, blues, and jazz pieces.  Along this journey students explore the world of composition and improvisation, applying tools they're learning to create their own piec ... I taught myself to play-by-ear. I now can teach others, this unique gift. I was playing professionally, before I had any training. My parents were advised to avoid stifling me with formal lessons. This caused me to passionately hunger for that formal education. And I put myself through music college as a result. I did very well, and with ease, because I already understood music, in practice. I believe in the concept that: We could get milk out of the refrigerator, before we could spell it. And we could say "refrigerator", before we could read the word. Why should music be any different?" Understanding what a refrigerator is, and why we need i ... View Profile

In the 1st lesson, I always ask the student what their goals are, what kind of music they want to play, what problems they have, etc.  Then I test them on basic skills to find ‘holes’ in their knowledge/skills to find the right level to start.  I have an uncanny ability to discover their main problem areas and/or misunderstood terminology and get to work right away handling them. It's rewarding to see students very quickly begin to brighten up as they clear away years of confusion and musical barriers. I’ve met many seasoned pros who have holes in their knowledge or skill that have prevented them from reaching the ... View Profile

During the last ten years of teaching, I have encountered many different types of students at a wide range of ages (4 to 65+ years old). Throughout my teaching experience, I have learned to adapt to my students before I make them adapt to me. That way, the students felt more comfortable and were more encouraged to learn and succeed. At this point in my life, teaching became something natural rather than a planned process. Nevertheless, I plan my lessons according to the students’ needs. Even though I started learning music at an early age, I believe that it is never too late to learn since music is one of the most beautiful languages a ... View Profile

What or who inspired you to start teaching?

Other professionals who I know and worked with who told me they thought it was a great thing to do after 40-50 years in the business: To give it back. I think pros who move to teaching have a unique perspective on teaching philosophy and can help even more then career teachers.

What do you love most about your job?

The fact that I’ve a huge passion for jazz and improvised music. I played it all my life all over the world, and with some of the best people in the business. When I teach, I’m just as concerned with transmitting that passion as well as the actual information that I transmit.

What types of students have you worked with?

Mostly adults, and a few high school or college students. Some are serious amateurs some are aspiring pros. Many of them come to me frustrated, that curriculums in their schools don’t exist, or are at best inadequate. It a good feeling to be able to be there for them.

Tell us about your passion for teaching

My passion for teaching comes from my passion for music itself. I saw one of the great jazz artists, Thelonious Monk and his quartet perform when I was in high school. It was an epiphany for me. I never wanted anything else for my life, but to emulate his greatness as best I could in whatever ever I did as an artist, or a teacher.

What advice would you give aspiring students?

There are a million reasons to quit; only one to stick with it. Be sure and be honest with yourself about your prospects. Ask other people who are in the know, doing what you want. You must listen to recordings of the great masters. They are the ultimate teacher. I will teach you how to listen to them and what to listen for.
