About

A Little About Swim Safe Aquatics

Our Beginning...

The owner April M. was a Competitive Swimmer and Water Polo Player for 24 years starting at the age of 3 years old in 1985. She has been a Swim Instructor since 1993 starting as an Assistant Teacher to Greta Anderson. She then at the age of 18 became Lifeguard certified and a Pro Cpr, First Aid & Lifeguard Trainer. April has held a degree in Special Needs Education AND Early Childhood Development since 2003. She has been actively working, teaching, volunteering and mentoring children, adolescents, and adults with Special Needs since 1990. In 2004, April also obtained her Physical Therapy Assitance Training. This qualifies her to do everything but diagnose.

What we are all about and our methods of teaching:

* We believe in Progressive Learning: Within the first set of lessons, we expect results that will greatly improve your child's chances to save themselves or your chance to save yourself in the event that you or they purposely or accidentally enter into any body of water.

*We NEVER rush you out of lessons. There is a gap between all lessons to make sure we answer all your questions and concerns.

* We only allow the students to recover for air by rolling laterally to the back float position - no front, head-lifting dog paddle allowed.

* We do not teach bubble blowing out of the mouth - we want them to hold their breath underwater, not to exhale underwater. Eventually, the students learn to exhale out through the nose.

* We teach lateral breathing and kicking before we teach pulling with "big arms".

* We do not teach over-arm pulling until after the student can swim across the pool independently and confidently by kicking, rolling to back float & breathe, rolling back over to swim - repeatedly. Freestyle is more easily & efficiently learned if the student learns roll-over or lateral breathing first.

* The Float to Breathe technique transitions efficiently into advanced stroke technique.

* We Specialize in stubborn or reluctant infant, children, adolescents, and adults. We can make ANYBODY Water Safe.

* We Specialize and are sensitive to people with Special Needs such as Autism, Down Syndrome, Developmental Delays and other mental and physical handicaps

* We will never push a child beyond their abilities. We help build students up by building their confidence and having them gain trust not only in the water but in their self and abilities and with the instructor.

* We create Happy, Confident and Safe Swimmers. Simply meaning, we want all students Happy in the water (no tears), Confident in their abilities and themselves and Safe whenever they are around pools or any body of water. We have found that this strategy greatly enhances a student's chance at success in the water and as a whole, a better swimming experience.

Frequently asked questions

We offer them a free evaluation so that when we start lessons, we can start working immediately. We take time to get to know every student and learn their strengths, weaknesses and any fears. We also see what skills they already possess and how much they are willing to do to in the trial lesson.

If we talk and communicate throughout the lesson to the student and the parent (if applicable) to explain our process and how we conduct our lessons. We also take extra time outside of the water to further discuss how our lessons work, answer any questions and explain the best course of action to get the student water safe or towards whatever goals they want to work towards.
