Carmen Staton Writer, Cooker, Baker
About
I have always done 3 things well : writing, cooking/baking, and helping others learn. Let me help you learn! I grew up in the kitchen at the elbow of my mother and grandmothers. I was a nanny for 17 years, co-owner of a successful catering company, and have written and published both a novel and a cookbook. I'm at the place in my life where I want to focus on doing the things that I love to do.
I have always been good at three things: cooking, writing, and helping others learn. Thankfully, I also have a passion for all three!
A beautifully prepared meal or a delectable dessert not only nourishes the body but also the soul. Food brings us together, binds us, creates memories and traditions. Learning to cook or bake is a gift to yourself as well as those you share the fruits of your labor with. I strive to have my students feel comfortable and confident.
I believe that everyone has a story to tell and everyone can find their own particular writing voice. Whether you need to write essays for school, are a closet poet, or want to write a novel, I can help. Many of us believe that our writing isn't good enough or cannot figure out what we want to write about. I provide a safe, nuturing environment so you can let your creative self flow.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to get to know my students and understand their needs, what they want and expect from the lesson/s, and what they already know. It is very important to me that my students feel relaxed and at ease. I also believe in a hands on approach. It's fine if you want to take notes but be willing to get your hands dirty too!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am not a professionally trained chef, however, I have loads of practical, professional experience. I co-owned a catering company in Los Angeles for 3 years. I've written a cookbook and written recipes for other authors. I've taught various cooking classes for both kids and adults. I am a published novelist as well and have given one-on-one sessions to people wanting to improve their writing.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
At this time I do not have a standard pricing format as I have found that each individual has specific needs and expectations. I always like to speak first before giving a quote. I am working on a pricing system for certain lessons and will post it here when it is available.
How did you get started teaching?
I fell in to teaching at the age of 18 as a preschool teaching assistant. I have been "teaching" in one way or another since that time (over 20 years). I started teaching cooking classes specifically when some of my daughter's friends expressed an interest in having me teach a series of cooking classes. I developed a writing class based on Anne Lamott's "Bird by Bird". I have also tutored clients working on their college entrance essays.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with kids, special needs kids, and adults in varying levels of previous knowledge and ability.
