Mikey W. says, "A+. Highly recommended. Steve helps you understand the piano. I've been taking (intermediate) piano lessons with Steve for two years and I wouldn't recommend anyone else. He knows the piano extremely well, in an intuitive and deeply personal way. He's written a book of insightful practice methodologies, many of which he's creatively come up with on his own, "The Road to Aqaba". He won't just teach you how to play, he will teach you how to practice! (And learning how to practice is arguably more important than learning how to play, not to mention you'll do a whole lot more of it than playing :) He will help you to know and to understand the piano (as well as how to play pieces). Jazz or Classical. Beginner or Advanced, I don't think it matters. Piano aside, he's one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's always prepared with thoughtful and interesting material, while flexible enough to follow and develop the student's mid-lesson interests and tangents. An incredibly peaceful soul, not once in two years was he frustrated with me, and I know that I can be an incredibly annoying student at times :o A+. Highly recommended. Develop musically & personally. Do it. You won't regret it." Read more

Hello, my name is Daniel! I'm a conservatory student studying composition and piano, and have been teaching all ages for several years. My approach is to not only teach the music on the page, but explain and define the details of the language that is music. I emphasize highly in technique, but also the character, context, and history of the music if applicable. I incorporate aspects of theory, music appreciation, improvisation, and history all in order to cultivate a well rounded and passionate artist, not just someone who can sit down and play the keys.

Your Piano Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

I have been taking voice lessons with Dan for about two months now, and have noticed obvious improvements. Dan demonstrates and communicates concepts in a way that is easy to understand and he also gives clear and actionable feedback. Beyond this, he is friendly, accommodating, and responsive -- all amazing qualities to have as a teacher and person. Highly recommend to anyone looking to learn more about music.

I approached Osvaldo in the middle of the pandemic, when my daughter's interest in piano was starting to fade. I am very grateful that he agreed to take on both those challenges. In the last one year, not only has he created fun and engaging classes online for my 9yr old, he has also rekindled her liking and interest in piano. I can see that my daughter is eager to meet him every week (via zoom and now face to face), he encourages her and also creates a very safe space for her to make mistakes and learn from them. Overall, he creates a very positive learning environment and I think that's exactly what my daughter needed. I can't wait for my younger daughter to turn five so that she can start learning with Osvaldo too! In fact - I keep thinking about how the first fourteen months of our lessons were online only, and Osvaldo was so great that it didn't feel remote! I'm going to recommend him for my niece on the east coast too when she turns five!
