SCB Bass Lessons
About
I have a passion not only for music, but also for teaching. I love to watch as my students take the information that I give them and use it to develop there own voice and find their own Identity in the music. I have played for over 40 years and have toured around the world with some amazing people/artists. I played on the Grammy Award winning album in 2008 called "Ikena". I taught at "Los Angeles College of Music" in Pasadena for 26 years were I created the Jazz Bass Cirriculum as well as a Bass Rhythm studies course which dealt with a lot of advanced rhythms and time signatures. At the school I also taught Sight Singing and Harmony and Theory classes.I can teach beginners as well as advanced students. I have around 8 books of material that I have written, which is the base for my teaching, but I also use other sources as well. I have a framework from which I teach, but I also adjust for each students individual needs.
I am attaching a you tube link to my bands page. It is music that I co-wrote with my friend Jeff Miley and we are playing live in the videos. The bands name is "The Odd Dogs".
Would Love to talk with you and help guide you on your Musical journey. Best----Steve B

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I will usually do a phone consultation and I look at two things. 1) Whats their level and 2) What are there goals for the lessons and beyond. Then if it seems like it works for both of us, I set up a time for the first lesson and this is were I really can get an Idea of their skill level. Than based on that I am able to start working with them on those areas that need improving.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have studied my whole life (even now I am still taking classes). I have had 26 years of teaching at the colleg level (which is an education in itself) and 40 plus years of performance experience has been a good training ground as well.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I usually charge $50 an Hour. I like to do hour lessons but am flexible on that.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching at an early age. Just private lessons and than I started to teach at the school in 1995. Teaching is a great way for musicians to become even better Players. To explain what you are doing forces you to really understand it.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of people. Younger and older. Professional and non-professional. Someone that is first learning the instrument and someone who has played for many years.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone that is not only a good player, but someone that can translate what it is that they do into words.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
First, make sure that you are ready and willing to put in some work. Gettin better takes practice and that means you need to put in the time. Second, think about what your goals are, I would even suggest writing them done. The goals you wish to get out of the lessons and also your goals outside of the lessons. This will help us have a goal to work towards.
