Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I usually assess their ability level with a few introduction skills. I have a detailed swim skills progression sequence that I take all swimmers through. This skills progression usually starts with water comfort and ends with detailed swim skills. Water Safety is embeded in this skill progression as well. I place new swimmers in appropriate place in skills progression. I try to find good games and songs to help ease the tension of young nervous swimmers.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a undergraduate and graduate degree in Kinesiology with emphasis in Sport Performance.
I also have American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification, American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, USA Swim coach, CIF swim coach, previous Water Safety instructor.

I live in San Bernardino area but I do most of my private lessons out of Claremont from Pomona College campus.

I started teaching swim lesssons as a teenager during the summer back in 2004. I have been involved in teaching lessons or coaching swimming ever since that time.

I have worked with students of all ages. The youngest that I have taught is 2 years of age. Ive also worked with adults. I've worked with special needs students on occasion as well.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I am currently working with a 4 year-old. He recently had a near drowning scare in the backyard pool of family residence. The boy was completely water safe and swimming after just four 30 minute sessions. I plan on using him to record different swim skill progressions. He is a natural in the water and is an example of a complete swim turn around.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would tell the student to search for someone who is experienced, patient, and enjoys to teach!!!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The students should be able to accurately assess the swimmers skill level.
How many sessions are usually needed?
Whats the difference between a group lesson with 2-3 students and a 1-on-1 session?
