Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I offer a free lesson to prospective students. Before beginning the free lesson I ask what each student hopes to gain from karate & then tailor their lessons accordingly.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I began studying Tae Kwon Do in 1971 with Mr Roy Kurban & Mr John Conroy, earning my Black belt in 1975. I owned & operated the West Coast Black Belt Academy from 1974-1980.
In 1973 I began my study of Shorin-Ryu karate with Mr Steve Fisher. I taught classes at the Steve Fisher Karate School from 1975-1978 on an as needed basis. I began teaching full time in August 2013.
After Steve Fisher passed away in 2016 I assumed full responsibility & complete ownership of the school.

How did you get started teaching?
Teaching was always a part of my Tae Kwon Do training. Prior to reaching the rank of Brown belt teaching lower ranking belts during class was always part of my training. After achieving the rank of Brown belt I began teaching classes under the watchful eyes of the ranking Black belts. Teaching was mandatory for future belt ranks.

I have taught students as young as 3-1/2 years old & as old as 75 years old.
I have taught children with Autism & children with physical disabilities.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I enjoy competing in karate tournaments both in Kumite & Kata winning trophies in each category.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make certain the instructor loves & has a passion for teaching!!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
They should ask themselves what they hope to achieve through the Martial Arts; belt rank, self-defense, self-confidence, self-control, weight loss or conditioning.
