About
I have been teaching private lessons for 33 years, and have been a working musician/performer for 37 years. I am widely recognized as one of the world's premier mandolin soloists, and was a featured performer on mandolin and fiddle at the world's most famous theme park (starts with a D) for 10,000+ shows over 16 years. I have been a Featured Guest Artist at more than 2 dozen Symphony Pops concerts, including the Houston Symphony, the Phoenix Symphony, and the Buffalo Philharmonic. I love to teach; several of my former students have notable careers as performers. In addition to private teaching, I have taught at numerous workshops, conferences and conventions all over the USA. My teaching philosophy is to cultivate the greatest possible general skill level and multifaceted understanding of the instrument and of music, but I do my best also to accommodate the student who only wants to work in one style.
I love to see a student have an AHA! moment! :)

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
During a first session with new students, I ask what their goals are, and I ask them to play one or two pieces to give me an idea about current skill level and stylistic preferences. I then outline a basic course of study, and ask if this sounds like what they are hoping to learn.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
B.A. in Music, Violin Performance emphasis, Occidental College 1980, Phi Beta Kappa and Departmental Honors. Studied privately in the 1980s with some of Europe's premier Classical mandolinists. I have worked with students of all ages and experience levels at numerous festivals, conferences, and workshops, including workshops with youth orchestras.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard fee structure:
$60/60 minutes in person;
$50/50 minutes of videoconference via Skype or Zoom.us .
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of all ages and skill levels. I do not insist on any prerequisite skill level, but I enthusiastically advise my students: The more they practice between lessons, the more they will enjoy the lessons and the music they play.
