Jonathan C. says, "I took lessons with Sean for almost 3 years before moving out of the area, and I would highly recommend him to students of all ages and skill levels. I came in with about 10 years of experience taking piano lessons with 4 teachers before him. Although he hasn't been teaching as long as others, his level of skill and understanding of the music was no less and in many cases even greater than other teachers I've had. He has a very impressive repertoire and was easily able to teach any and all challenging pieces I wanted to learn by composers like Chopin, Liszt, and Beethoven. One thing that sets him apart is his very recent experience as a student himself, performing in various settings and competing. Sean knows what it's like to learn and teach piano in a modern setting. I have no doubt that you (or your child) would be in great hands studying with Sean. It was worth every penny." Read more

Daryl T. says, "This is for Mr. Larry Evans, the piano instructor. I'm an adult piano student here and I started here about a year ago, in March 2014. Larry is the only piano teacher I've ever had but I can't imagine learning from another instructor. He's extremely friendly, attentive, and patient with his students, but he also doesn't candy-coat everything so I can count on Larry for honest constructive but respectful feedback. Although Larry is open to working with me on specific pieces, his teaching style is progressive and diverse; I'm learning simple pieces as well as theory and finger techniques. As you would expect, he's a very talented performer so it's great to see your instructor in action because it's very encouraging. Most importantly, I feel that he genuinely cares about my musical development. Additionally, Larry specializes in teaching children. Don't hesitate to give him a call; he offers great value for your time and investment!" Read more

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

Larry was my son's piano instructor for 2 years. He's a wonderful piano player and a very patient piano teacher. My son learned more from Larry in two years than he ever learned from his previous instructors at Alhambra School of Music on Main Street. Our only regret was we didn't find him sooner. Dec 14, 2020

Todd's extensive knowledge and genuine passion for music make him an outstanding teacher! I really appreciate his ability to make piano lessons both enjoyable and effective. My son always came home from lessons excited to show me what he’d learned that day- which is really saying something! Todd's kind nature and patience creates a warm, welcoming learning environment that puts both kids (and parents!) at ease. If you're searching for a piano teacher who can inspire and educate your child, while keeping things fun and engaging, Todd is the perfect choice!

April is great!! My son has been in show choir for 3 years and It was my son’s first private lesson outside of choir. He has been struggling, having a hard time reaching some of the high notes and running out of air. April was able to identify the problem on his first lesson and explained it so well to him that he finally figured it out. She helped Noah how to improve and he was so excited about recognizing his mix voice. He couldn’t stop singing the songs he was having trouble with or scared to sing, it was like night and day. She also has great vocal exercises online for easy access from anywhere. Noah is excited and is looking forward to his next lesson!!! I also love the fact that she is nearby. Thanks April for giving him his confident back in singing those hard to reach note. I don’t know why I’d didn’t see a vocal coach for him sooner.
