Your kickboxing questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do kickboxing classes cost?

Kickboxing classes cost $120 to $170 per month on average. Prices depend on the number of classes per week included in the membership plan and the gym or studio location. Membership plans that include unlimited classes per month typically fall at the higher end of the range.

Most gyms also offer drop-in classes for $30 to $35 each. On-demand kickboxing classes offered online cost $20 to $40 per month.

What is kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a full-contact combat sport that relies on striking movements, including punches, kicks, and knees. Competitive fights typically take place in a boxing ring, with fighters wearing boxing gloves, shorts, and mouth guards. Muay Thai, karate, and most other martial arts incorporate aspects of kickboxing.

In recent years, kickboxing has been adapted into a high-intensity calorie-burning fitness workout.

What is the difference between kickboxing and boxing?

Traditional boxing only allows punches, while kickboxing allows punches, kicks, and knees.

Is kickboxing a good workout?

Kickboxing is an excellent high-intensity workout that combines cardio and strength training to provide a variety of health and fitness benefits:

  • Build your strength and tone your muscles
  • Burn fat and lose weight
  • Improve your cardio health
  • Increase your endurance
  • Boost your energy
  • Improve your balance and coordination

A kickboxing fitness class can burn 350 to 450+ calories per hour, depending on the intensity level and class length.

Is kickboxing good for self-defense?

Kickboxing can be effective for self-defense if learned from a martial arts studio. The sport incorporates strikes like punching and kicking while also teaching you to evade or defend against attacks. However, kickboxing doesn't incorporate grappling moves like those found in Jiu-Jitsu or Aikido that help you to escape an attacker holding you on the ground.

Cardio kickboxing fitness classes don't provide self-defense skills but will improve your strength, coordination, and endurance.

How long do kickboxing classes last?

Kickboxing fitness and martial arts classes typically last 45 to 60 minutes.

Where to find kickboxing classes near me?

Follow these tips to find the best kickboxing studio near you:

  • Compare membership packages from multiple studios.
  • Read studio and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the studio offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the studio to confirm it's clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free or discounted trial class to ensure the studio is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the membership contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask kickboxing studios?

Ask these questions to ensure you find the best kickboxing studio for you:

  • What membership plans do you offer, and how much do they cost?
  • Do you offer a free or discounted trial class?
  • What is your class schedule?
  • Are your classes beginner-friendly?
  • Are your classes more fitness-oriented or martial arts-oriented?
  • How many people are in a typical class?
  • How long does each class last?
  • What should I wear to class?
  • Do I need to be in good shape before I take a class?

He took the time to meet with me to discuss my goals and listen to the problems I was having with fitness. His workouts are interesting and appropriately challenging. I’m new to boxing but he has made it an amazing experience. He is knowledgeable and flexible with scheduling. So glad I signed up!!

We enrolled our 7-year old son at Tri-City Aikido in summer 2017. He is a shy and smallest kid in his class, and we thought learning martial art can help to build up his confidence and learn some self-defense skills. We love the way Sensei Anthony teaches the kids class: he puts strong focus in discipline, teaches kids how to protect themselves and he knows how to make the class fun! After a few months' training, our son became more confident and developed situational awareness while learning basic Aikido techniques. Seeing the benefits of martial art on my son, I started training in the adult classes myself the same year. Sensei Anthony is very tentative to beginners like me. I got to train with black-belts and it certainly helped me to understand the Aikido techniques more quickly. Highly recommended dojo for tots, kids, beginners and black-belts who want to learn the essence of martial arts while having fun!
