About

Before my recent retirement, I was a professional swim coach for 20 years running a USA Swimming CLub Team here in Southern California. As Head Coach and CEO many of my athletes achieved Junior Olympic and Jr. National status, set numerous club and high school records, became CIF Champions and went on to become collegiate athletes. With these accomplishment, I received the American Swimming Coaches Association Level 3 achievement. Whether you are just learning to swim or want to take your swimming to the next level through advanced stroke analysis, I can help you achieve your goals.

I love working with swimmers of all levels of ability, whether just learning to swim or elite athletes wanting to take their swimming to the next level, it gives me joy to help swimmers achieve their goals.

Coach Mark was my HS coach as well as mine and my sons club coach. He is a master of his craft and works persistently to support his athletes. Also, coach is himself a student of the sport by always staying up to date on the latest in the world of swimming whether it is news, training, technique, performance, or anything else related. My son started competitive swimming in the fall of 8th grade. Over the course of the next 4 years, exclusively coached by Mark, he swam at Jr. Nationals, made CIF all 4 years, was a 2x All-American, 1x individual CIF champion, 2x individual CIF Runner-Up, 4x 1st team All-League, 1x League MVP, and 4x Academic All-American. After HS he attended Princeton and was offered a roster spot with their D1 mens swimming program. Coach Mark is exceptional with details as evidenced by his workouts and stroke work. He is the epitome of commitment and dedication to excellence, bar none. Last, but not least, his relationships with athletes and their families transcend pool deck.

Coach Tierney understands what each swimmer needs and tailors the training to individual needs. He also displays a great deal of patience with the swimmers as they learn and grow in the sport.

Coach Mark helped our daughter develop her swimming skills from the time she was 8 years old barely making a 50 yard swim to when she was 15 years old swimming Individual Medley swims and making cuts in senior swim meets. Throughout her years with Coach Mark, he was always a positive influence on our daughter. He was encouraging whenever she was having bad days and would celebrate her successes with her. He always had a way of being able to coach and teach at a level my daughter understood no matter what age she was. Always remained professional. Highly recommend Coach Mark.

    Frequently asked questions

My typical process for working with a new student is to speak with them in detail about their swimming background and what they would like to achieve, and then come up with a plan best suited to meet their needs.

I swam competitively from a young child all the way through college. After years of building my own financial independance through a company in which I was one of the primary owners, when my son started swimming competitively I got involved with his USA Swimming club team, where I ended up eventually taking over as the Head Coach and CEO. I stayed on in this capacity for 20 years until my retirement in December, 2018.

Pricing varies depending on the varying degree and needs of the athlete. However, my starting rate is $100 an hour.

As a competitive swimmer, I first got invovled in teaching swimming as a means of employement while in college.

I've worked with all levels of swimmers from infants just learning how to swim to collegiate National level athletes.

The most fond events I have of coaching are watching athletes I have trained succeed in swimming and in life, many of whom started as children through swim lessons and then went on to swim in college and have successful carees and families as adults.

Find someone who has the experience you are looking for, is easy to communicate with, and who you can trust.
