About

Greetings! My name is Zachary Konick. I am a composer of contemporary classical music working toward my PhD in music composition at the University of California, San Diego. At the university, I currently teach music theory classes as a teaching assistant. I have also been a classically trained percussionist and a drum set player since youth, having studied under various teachers of the highest caliber. I later incorporated the hammered dulcimer into my practice in my teenage years, and have been teaching lessons on the instrument for the past five years. I am always excited to have the opportunity to share my knowledge of music with eager students. When I don't know something outright, I always go out of my way to find the answer, thus helping both of us learn something new. I hope to get the chance to work with you and help you achieve a greater level of ability, no matter what stage you are at.

Frequently asked questions

I always meet the student wherever they are at in their practice. It is important for me to first understand what the student wishes to achieve through our lessons, and what excites them the most about the art form they are pursuing, so I know how to best structure our lesson goals. What goals the student has, as well as their current ability level will affect where we begin our path.

I have many years of performance experience in many facets (drums for musical theater and jazz band, singing, concert percussion, hammered dulcimer), while working through three universities on my track toward my PhD in music composition. Below are the list of institutions I have attended.

University of Maryland, B.M. in Music Composition

University of South Florida, M.M. in Music Composition

University of California, San Diego, PhD in Music Composition

For online lessons, I am currently offering lessons at the rate of $45 for an hour, or $30 for a half an hour (though I feel what we can achieve in this time is a bit limited).

I am very open about my background and musical philosophies. I also come from quite a diverse musical background, having played drums for various musical theater shows, requiring myself to perform in various musical genres and styles from pop, to punk, soul, blues, rock, folk, swing, reggae, latin jazz, celtic, afro-cuban, etc. I am most focused on contemporary classical music, which is an 'experimental' form of art music. As such, I can work with students who wish to work in a vast array of styles. Please just let me know your background, and what you wish to get out of your lessons.
