Each session, I focus on teaching a lesson tailored specifically to each students' needs and moving step by step accordingly based on a structured syllabus. If necessary, and at no cost to the student, I am willing to go overtime with the student to ensure that they go home with a clear understanding of their piano pieces and what is expected from them in their assigned homework. This allows for our lesson in the following week's session to be as productive as possible in order for us to move on to the next level and learn new music pieces. I also teach Music Theory classes to help... I am passionate in teaching the art of music and piano to ...

Acting is living work. It grows, breathes, evolves. There are many tried and true methods and techniques out there lauded by working actors: Stanislovsky, Meisner, Hagan, Tsuzuki, but there is no one size fits all. My focus is on the idividual. Looking to make you the best actor you can be. There's nothing quite like watching a students face light up when something just clicks and they take hold of them moment or the sound of their excitement when they see their name in black and white on the cast list. In my 23 years in Theatre, it is truly my favorite thing to see.

Dal W. says, "The experience of learning under Mikhail Usov ("Misha") has been wonderful. I've taken lots of other clown classes, some from world renowned performers and teachers (whom I love and adore, too); but Misha's class has been a truly unique learning experience. From the time we have taken studying character--not just the idea of a clown "character"--but how it applies to me and the development of my unique clown character, to the time we have taken experimenting with clown "bits" and developing a process whereby the "bits" can come together to form an entire show. And finally, I'd like to add that because my class is a solo class, every note is 100% applicable to me and my development as a performer. There's no "fluff" and there's wasted no time. It's like taking a clown class strapped to a rocketship that's laser targeted on my success as a performer. It's amazing." Read more

Your Acting Classes questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do acting classes cost?

Acting classes cost $25 to $65 per hour on average for group classes or $50 to $150+ per hour to hire a private acting coach. Prices vary depending on where you live and the instructor's experience and reputation. Acting studios that offer ongoing weekly classes typically charge $150 to $350 per month.

Acting courses and workshops can cost as little as $200 to as much as $2,800+, depending on the content, number of sessions, and the instructor's demand. Some acting workshops are short, 1- or 2-day intensive classes focusing on one aspect of the industry, while other programs last 4 to 8 weeks and cover several topics, methods, and techniques.

Most studios offer a free trial class so you can get a feel for the teaching style and decide if it's right for you.

Are online acting classes worth it?

Online acting classes are worth it if you want to pursue acting and are unable to attend acting classes in person. With online video calling platforms like Zoom and Skype, you can now study acting with the best in the industry from the comfort of your own home! Many reputable acting coaches—including those right here on Lessons—now offer online acting classes and teach the same methods and techniques that they teach in the studio.

Do you need acting classes to become an actor?

You technically don't need acting classes to become an actor. However, acting classes can help you gain confidence, learn new methods and techniques, analyze scenes and scripts, and build new industry connections and relationships. Acting classes can also teach you about the business side of acting, which is as important as acting itself.

How long do acting classes take?

Acting class length varies depending on the studio and the type of class. Some studios have 2-hour classes, while others have classes lasting 3 to 5 hours. Depending on the location, acting classes may be offered in several formats, such as ongoing weekly classes, weekend intensive workshops, and training programs that can run anywhere from 2 to 8+ weeks.

What skills do you need to be an actor?

While the necessary skillset varies depending on the type of acting you pursue (think Broadway theater vs. TV commercials vs. film), all actors need a broad range of skills to portray the expressions and emotions of a character so effectively that they temporarily transport the audience to a world where the actor is indeed that character. This often involves:

  • Memorizing lines and stage cues
  • Analyzing scripts and scenes
  • Developing a character's emotions and physical expressions
  • Working with other actors, directors, and production crews
  • Adapting to unexpected changes and situations
  • Speaking clearly and adjusting one's voice to align with the character
  • Learning and developing different acting methods and techniques
  • Being comfortable in front of an audience or camera

Reviews for Sacramento acting classes

THOMAS F.
There are many sides to my experience in working with Mikhail. Firstly, I have come to study with Mikhail with much humility to his expertise, discipline and extensive experience in bringing the intimacy of the art coupled with the highly disciplined technique to create a beautiful and penetrating impression. I also appreciate his deep insight and love for the 'real' theater which is designed to uplift the soul. My own personal interest relates to character development, but the results of my study with Mikhail has far exceeded the parameters of my study to encompass the whole interplay between artistic expression and the human being who is a vehicle for that expression.

I watched Keith perform about 7-8 songs in midtown Sacramento about 3 weeks ago. His love of music translates to his unique sound. He was respectful of the venue and unlike other artists, he humbly engages he crowd. Keith invites everyone into his musical journey. He is a delight to watch in person. I would recommend him to anyone looking to pick up a musical skill, especially piano!
