Katie's Dance Lessons
About
Hi there! I've been teaching dance for the past 15 years in various styles such as Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Tap, Acrobatics, Gymnastics, Modern, Lyrical, Contemporary, Irish Step, Bellydance, African Tribal, Ballroom, and Cheer. I've also been a dancer my whole life and love constantly brushing up on skills. Currently teaching ages 4-18, but have experience teaching as young as 18months and as old as 58years old. I've helped choreograph wedding dances, Gymanstics floor routines, Cheer routines, Dance routines for recitals, and Competition Dance performances. I've also taught classes in Choreography and Improv encouraging students to choreograph for themselves.
I also have a background in Mental Health Counseling and frequently do lessons with children and adults with special needs.
Hope to see you on the Dance floor soon!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Depending on the situation, I either ask the students for what they'd like to learn out of the lesson they are attending, or if it is a predetermined class, we discuss the expectations and skills achieved during this class. I always start out with a fun activity to take the pressure off. A slow intro and a lot of explanation seems to be the best way with my beginner students.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling so I have a great background in working with people and understanding them. I have been teaching for the past 15 years in dance specifically. I currently take classes and continue to teach and collaborate with other teachers to be a more rounded dancer and teacher.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
For a private lesson, I charge $30 for 30 mins and $60 for 60 mins.
For 2-3 students, I charge $45 for 30 mins and $75 for 60 mins.
For 4+ students, I charge $15 per student for 30 mins, and $30 per student for 60 mins.
If your dancer is special needs, I recommend private lessons. These I charge $35 for 30 mins and $70 for 60 mins.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching as a student teacher in a work study program at my home dance studio. This helped me pay for some of my dance classes and my costumes when the recital came around. From there, I ended up being our first choice substitute for when the teachers were out. During college, I took dance classes as electives and began coaching gymnastics fora few years. This helped round out more of my dance education and physical fitness education
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with almost anyone under the sun! I work with young dancers, I've run "mommy + me" classes for dancing and gymnastics, I've worked with adults in gymnastics and dance, and I've worked with special needs individuals of varying ages and varying special needs/cognitive delays. I have not had a lot of experience with those with physical disabilities, but I always try to work in modifactions when possible.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone you enjoy as well as someone who has what you are looking for. Don't narrow your search to only one thing, but make sure that person can help with what you are specifically working on. If you don't like the person, they could be as qualified/the best in the industry, you won't get a lot out of your class. This game is not just about technique but also stage presence and performance. Don't forget about that in your teachers as well!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Ask all of them or state your needs as best as you can. If you can't put it to words, try to find another way to communicate the need. Try to think of goals prior to coming to a lesson rather than a question. Some teachers want to know what your goals are ahead of time.
