Rameez S. says, "Marshal is a great teacher. My son is getting home lessons and I am quite happy with his progress. Marshal understands my child and tries new techniques at his level. Marshal listens to my child and talks to him which makes it easier for him to learn. Marshal is a decent man who talks less but makes sure he is working hard. Would definitely recommend him!" Isabel K. says, "We interviewed a few violin teachers hoping to find one who has experience teaching children as young as 3+, which is when our son started, and neither of us are violinists. Our son asked for a violin when he was 3 and we wanted to fulfill his wish. The task of finding a suitable teacher is harder than one thinks. Kids at that age are active, have limited communication skills, and teachers can underestimate their capabilities, but likewise, children are very good at manipulating the situation and it can turn into a stressful situation for the parents + teacher. After 4 months with Miss Dennie I want to commend her for her patience and keeping the class fun. She is very patient with our son, teaches him seasonal songs (Halloween and Christmas right now), teaches him piano during breaks and also a bit of dance. She is very expressive with her movements and we can see him copying her movements when he practices at home which is great to have violin role models like that. We also like that she has a lot of knowledge about music programs and activities in the Bay Area so as to give us options as our son gets older and better. The analogies and narration she uses so he comprehends music tempos, interpretation, etc, are very much in-line with what he's able to comprehend at his young age. We also appreciate the feedback she gives us with regards to his progress. Our son is very committed to violin (despite his young age!) and we commend Miss Dennie for taking this seriously by continuously stimulating him and giving him a well-rounded experience." Read more

An Adaptive, Holistic Approach To Teaching Music After many years of teaching piano, theory and composition in a variety of situations, I have come to rely on an adaptive approach to teaching which recognizes that regardless of age or experience level, music students are individuals who have different styles of learning, different gifts, different interests, different goals, and different challenges. I have learned to be as creative in teaching as I am creative in composing and performing. Indeed, I have always felt that performing, composing and teaching are inseparable, and therefore I approach each leg of this “holy trinity” with the sam...

  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

  • Do you have a degree in music?

  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

Reviews for San Leandro piano teachers

Marshal is not only a gifted musician but also highly skilled at teaching. Marshal infuses music theory into his lessons, helping me understand the meaning behind the notes. He also uses personalized techniques to help with proper hand placement and reading sheet music. As an adult student, I was nervous about picking up an instrument but Marshal customized his curriculum to my learning style, characteristics and ability, making my journey with the piano an enjoyable yet challenging experience! I've been working with Marshal for only a few months and I've made great strides in my ability to both read sheet music and play the piano. He's also very patient and highly personable! I highly recommend working with Marshal. Very excited for my future lessons and continued piano skills growth!
