About

I am very patient! I enjoy teaching beginners how to play conga(s), djembe, and bongos. I've been doing it for 25+ years! Check out my website at spmast.com .

I enjoy spreading knowledge and awereness of how polyrhthyms work, so that audiences and especially dancers can have a richer experience of music. More information is avaiable at spmast.com .

Scott meets you where you are at and builds from there. I was very nervous about learning drums but he made it very comfortable and accessible.

Scott breaks things down in a rhythm that makes it easily digestible. Whether its AfroCuban on Conga Drums or Zimbabwe Djembes, he is very knowledgeable about what he teaches and it makes for a fun class. I have been taking classes from Scott for over 20 years! Throughout that time Ive been in class with professional drummers and brand new drummers. He meets everyones needs.

    Frequently asked questions

We begin with a discussion of how to make the basic sounds on the drum: tone, bass, and slap. Proper posture is also discussed. Then I demonstrate a rhythm, and break it down little by little, so that students can learn to imitate what I am doing and play it by themselves. Eventually we will combine different parts together. I can also teach one persone how to combine rhythms to play a melody on multiple drums. Cultural context is also discussed.

Although most of my learning has taken place in the U.S., I have also travelled and studied for months at a time in Cuba and Zimbabwe. I have played for dance classes and with bands for since the 1990's. For more info, and some videos, check out my website at spmast.com. Additionally, I hold a BA in Psychology from Naropa University.

I encourage the use of smartphones to make a video clip and/or audio clip of lessons, so that students may have a reference point for study or practice time, in between lessons. Private lessons are $75/hr. Group lessons are set up to run once a week for several months and are priced at $30 per person per 90 minute class. E.g., a 10 class series would meet once a week for 10 weeks, for 90 minutes each time, at a cost of $300 per person. For more info, visit spmast.com/instruction.

One of my teachers had me sub for him in his class while he was on tour. Additionally, when people see me play, they may ask if I can show them how to do it. Turns out I really enjoy teaching!!

I have worked with students of all ages and backgrounds, in public schools, University's, and private groups. Most people are into it as a hobby, but some eventually go on to perform professionally. I have also worked with people with brain injuries, as it turns out that hand drumming can help with the healing process.

Visit spmast.com/performance to see a list of my recent gigs. I love performing! I also love teaching and just finished up the fall semester classes.

If students have any particular goals for themselves, it is useful for me to know that. Also, bring an open mind and willingness to learn.

I am open to all questions! There are no wrong questions, so students can ask me anything.
