Meredith A. says, "I had a great experience working with Dr. Jaffri. Learning self-defense means putting yourself in uncomfortable situations, and Dr. Jaffri patiently teaches you how to handle those situations. He goes at your pace but also pushes you to learn new skills. I am much more aware of my surroundings now and feel confident about my ability to defend myself if the need arises. I think every woman should learn some basic self-defense, and Dr. Jaffri is a great teacher. He is also very flexible about scheduling and made it easy for me to fit lessons into busy weeks. Highly recommend. " Read more

ElizaBeth M W. says, "The instructors teach with heart and humor. They accept your physical and emotional limitations whilst pushing your edge, and come up with alternative excercises when injured. There is a deep sense of comradery amongst practitioners. We love to see each other grow in our practice. The classes focus on tactics and agency in a variety of situations, and give no illusions about the brutal nature of the violence it teaches. As a survivor of sexual assault with PTSD, I have found that, while triggered in class occasionally, I have become less easily triggered outside of it. Since beginning my practice, I have found that I view my fears and experiences more pragmatically, and am less prone to anxiety attacks. I am grateful for my experience in the dojo." Read more

Classes held at community centers typically cost less than those held in professional dojos. Private karate lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour and are tailored to your needs and skill level.

In addition to the class fee, you'll have extra costs for uniforms, belts, and testing fees. A karate uniform—also called a Gi, karategi, or dogi—costs $60 to $120 on average, while belts cost $5 to $20. Some schools include a gi and belt with your first month's tuition. Testing fees vary by school, but beware of schools that charge more than $20 per test.

  • Research the instructors' competition record and reputation.
  • Read dojo and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the school offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the dojo in person to confirm it is clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free trial class to ensure the school is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the membership contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask karate schools before joining?

Ali is such a genuine person. He does this because he actually cares. I love his teaching method. He builds on what you’ve already learned to really increase that muscle memory. Somethings are repetitive, because they need to be, but never boring. He’s no drill sergeant, but he will make you work. He instills very serious knowledge in a fun way. He’s super professional and I’ve never felt uncomfortable (which is very important when you’re working through these scenarios). I’m so grateful to be taking these classes. I’ve noticed a huge boost in my confidence just knowing that I’m equipped to handle any situation. I 1000% recommend taking Self Defense classes with Dr. Ali Jaffri!

My son and I are so very blessed to have been able to join the profound fitness family, I say family because Diana truly cares about everyone that walks through her door. I love that there are small personalized classes to help me reach my fitness and health goals and also one on one personal training. I was nervous about going back to the gym because I injured my back awhile ago. Diana has a specialty in helping people with injuries and disabilities modifying workouts to your personal needs. She also has the ability to help the average everyday person with a workout suited for them to challenging the extremely competitive athlete. She also has an amazing kids program that helps kids gain confidence, respect, discipline and martial art skills! My son needed physical therapy at a young age (about 15 months old) and Diana was been able to help him and modify a program suitable for a toddler. My son is now 5 and has joined the kids program and he is just beaming with confidence and is excited for class everyday! I recommend profound fitness to anyone and everyone who is looking for help in changing their health and fitness or even looking for the next step in their fitness and athletic goals and training!
