About

Hi! My name is Monica Allan, and I am a Milford, CT based teacher of voice, acting, and beginner piano. I believe that above all, learning should be fun, and not damaging to a student's confidence. The arts should be a fun, forgiving space to learn and grow! For voice, I specialize in musical theater, but can help with just about anything else. Let's talk!

As far as training, I have been singing since the age of eight, with a heavy emphasis on musical theater. I attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA) as a Vocal Major, and have my BFA in Musical Theater from the University of Hartford (the Hartt School of Music). I have been teaching since my graduation in 2016, and have seen students grow in ways they never thought was possible.

One of my biggest goals as a teacher is to give my students a great education while also being careful not to hurt their confidence/self image in the process. I had many teachers who, while very talented and knowledgeable, were not careful with students over the years, and it showed. This is not life or death, this is music! It should be joyful, it should make you believe in the goodness of people, and it should be an outlet for the hidden, emotional parts of ourselves. There is no reason to tear down a student. It doesn't help them learn, it only hurts.

As a result of my extensive training, when teaching both voice and piano, I focus heavily on music theory, because you must read the language in order to speak it. Even if a student does not pursue either subject in the future, that way, they have a headstart in whatever other instruments they pursue. I also find that it makes the music make more sense. The musician and the composer work together through the sheet music to tell the story better.

I also offer help with audition prep, for community theater, college auditions, and at a professional level.
