Kalimah S. says, "Rita was amazing! An excellent instructor with years of experience and it shows! Our kids were so comfortable with her. I hired her for private lessons for my 3 and 6 year old boys. Both who were very afraid of the water. Upon our first conversation she was informative and responsive. She arrived early to our first lesson and came equipped with toys and swim stuff which made my boys more comfortable immediately. She's very patient with the kids, even through the crying, fussing, and fear she not only taught them but comforted them through these moments. After our first set of lessons, my boys are no longer afraid of the water. My 6 year old is mastering his freestyle arms and my 3 year old can float on his back, return to the wall, jumps in unafraid. It's amazing to see the growth in such a short time. I will be signing up again to further my children's skills. I'm so glad I found Rita, overall a great warm hearted caring matured woman, who is highly skilled, patient, honest, on-time, and dependable. I usually wouldn't take the time to write a review but I would've loved to have a more in depth reviews to read prior to booking our first session. Her reviews didn't do her enough justice. A trustworthy instructor who I have recommended to all my friends and family. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND MS RITA!!! " Read more

Ali M. says, "I am thoroughly impressed and eternally grateful for the amazing instruction JP provided my 5 year old daughter. From the start he exhibited such professionalism responding efficiently to my requests and confirming all our appointments. He bonded so well with my daughter and established the necessary trust for her to feel safe to push herself. She moved from being fearful of the water to now loving it and I am so very appreciative for everything that JP did to ensure that she can now swim. He really is passionate about his work and it certainly shows in the results we obtained. I am still AMAZED! Thank you JP!" Read more

Melissa J. says, "I'm an adult who never learned how to swim. Friends & family have tried but my uncomfortability in the water have made it very difficult. In my first lesson with Mariam she eased my uncomfortability & taught me how to float & do beginner techniques in the water. I couldnt believe after one hour I knew more than anyone has ever tried to teach me in all my years of life. As i continue to do lessons with Mariam, every lesson i gain more skills & confidence in the water. She will push you & encourage you in the best possible way - which will allow you to never get too much into your head & doubt yourself!!!! She is an excellent instructor! " Read more

If you are an adult with limited or no experience swimming, you've stopped at the right profile! Lessons are available where I travel to your pool or we can use mine in Miramar, FL from March - October. Hi, I’m Sarah King and I had the privilege of learning how to swim at a young age. I fell in love with the water and swam in college as a competitive swimmer. Along the way, in addition to the physical health benefits of exercise, I learned firsthand how much peace of mind, clarity, and stress relief swimming can provide. Over the 23 years I have been a swim instructor, I have coached many ages and skill levels. However, my favorite swim clie

Greetings! My focus is 100% on the student. It is my priority to ensure they feel like they are getting the attention they need to adhere to their specific goals. If the student is not clear on their goals, I will help to set definitive and crystal clear goals (if you want), while creating a strategic plan with actionable items to show a doable roadmap to achieve whatever goal you might have! Once you can see that your imagination is your imaginary "sky", you can surpass the impossible, be the best and become a true WINNER! You can have the best ship, but you will drift around forever if you don't have a highly specific and niche goal. I'm al

Your Swimming Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do swim classes cost near me?

Swim classes cost $40 to $80 per hour for private lessons or $100 to $160 per month for weekly classes with a small group of people. Fees increase for extended sessions longer than 1 hour and for teachers who were professional competitive swimmers.

What should you expect during a swim class?

During a swim class that's typically 30 to 60 minutes long, you should expect to learn:

  • Floating techniques
  • Breathing practices
  • Basic kicking styles
  • Treading water
  • Basic swimming strokes
  • Diving and underwater swimming techniques
  • Long-distance swimming methods
  • Rescue, CPR, and snorkel training for advanced lessons

What should I wear and bring to a swimming class?

Supplies to bring to a swimming class include:

  • Swimwear that fits properly
  • A swim diaper for children who aren't potty trained
  • Tote bag to keep your clothes dry and store your things
  • Flip-flops to keep your feet clean around the pool area
  • Sunscreen if the outdoor pool gets direct sunlight
  • Swimming cap and hair ties
  • Flotation devices
  • Toiletries for showering
  • Plastic water bottle
  • Towels
  • Goggles
  • Earplugs

Extra tips: The swimming pool may offer some of these items for free or at a fee. For girls learning to swim competitively, a 1-piece bathing suit is necessary.

How many swim classes do I need to learn swimming?

People without a fear of water need 15 to 20 hours of swim classes on average to learn swimming. Those who must also overcome their fears of drowning will need more time and practice to swim confidently.

What is a good age for a child to take swimming lessons?

A good age for a child to take swimming lessons is from 2 to 5 years old. After this age, the lungs of children are strong enough to hold their breath underwater long enough to swim.

Good to know: Introducing a child to the water at 1 year old helps them feel comfortable in a pool, although they won't be able to swim yet.

Are infant swim classes safe?

Closely supervised infant swim classes are typically safe for children from the age of 6 months onward. However, infant swim classes don't guarantee that a child will learn enough to stop themselves from drowning.

Note: Some doctors also caution that children prone to respiratory infections shouldn't swim in chlorinated pools until they are more than 2 years old.

Can I get swimming lessons as an adult?

You can get swimming lessons as an adult at most pools with private instructors. Call ahead to ask for the schedule of adult classes, age requirements, and a list of anything you should bring with you.

How do I find a good swimming class?

Use this checklist before booking classes at the local pool to find a good swimming class:

  • Compare class prices from 3+ teachers or pools near you.
  • Ask for proof of their water safety education, lifeguard training, and other related credentials.
  • Read their reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Check that the swimming pool facility has liability insurance.
  • Keep a copy of the terms and conditions of the swimming lesson contract and refund policy.
  • Beware of the lowest prices that can indicate low-quality lessons.
  • Don't make a full season payment upfront for lessons unless you can get a partial refund later.

What questions do I ask a swim class instructor?

  • How long have you been teaching people to swim?
  • What’s the minimum amount of experience required for a teacher?
  • Can students warm up in the pool before classes begin?
  • Is swimming practice time at the pool outside of lessons included in this price?
  • Will I get a locker to store my things in during class?
  • Do you offer discounts for families?
  • How long does it typically take to teach a child to swim?
  • What should I work on to swim better?
  • Which exercises should students practice at home that help to learn swimming faster?
  • Can you create a customized training plan for each student?
  • How do you describe your teaching style?
  • What do you do to help children overcome their fears of water?
  • Are goggles or swim caps required for all lessons?

Reviews for Miami Gardens swimming classes

Rita is an excellent teacher and a mentor. I remember my first day full of anxiety and fear. She guided me through my fear and changed it to my strength. Now I just love water and have learned so many techniques in less than 6 lessons and being 27 was really hard for me to get that flexibility and strength which I have now. I can't believe how much I enjoy swimming now all thanks to Rita. I would miss you.

Mariam will push you very hard. When I met her I couldn't swim properly, three months later we just swam 1.5k in the ocean against the current. I didn't think it was possible. She even taught me how to do butterfly. Best teacher, great personality, you will gain more than just good technique by choosing to learn with her. (Her Syrian cooking is pretty delicious too, and her jokes!)
