Amanda S. says, "Our daughter started karate lessons in August after I attended a self defense seminar. This dojo is a true Godsend for so many reasons. Not only do they teach self defense, focus, techniques and respect, but they also treat each and every person like a member of the family. Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do karate classes cost?

Karate classes cost $100 to $150+ per month on average. Prices depend on the class size, student's age, location, and number of classes per week included in the membership plan. Classes held at community centers typically cost less than those held in professional dojos. Private karate lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour and are tailored to your needs and skill level.

In addition to the class fee, you'll have extra costs for uniforms, belts, and testing fees. A karate uniform—also called a Gi, karategi, or dogi—costs $60 to $120 on average, while belts cost $5 to $20. Some schools include a gi and belt with your first month's tuition. Testing fees vary by school, but beware of schools that charge more than $20 per test.

Where to find karate classes near me?

Follow these tips to find the best karate schools near you:

  • Look for a reputable dojo that focuses on karate rather than a mixed martial arts gym.
  • Research the instructors' competition record and reputation.
  • Read dojo and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the school offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the dojo in person to confirm it is clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free trial class to ensure the school is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the membership contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask karate schools before joining?

Ask these questions to ensure you join the best karate dojo for you:

WRrior Martial Arts is an excellent dojo with an outstanding Sensei. They provide ample opportunities for as many classes as you would like to avail yourselves of, all of which is included in your tuition. For those with a high level of commitment, they have teams for competition and Demo for a very small fee. Our dojo has aligned itself with AAU, for our tournaments and we have found it to be organized and very professional. These competitions are not required but a great opportunity for kids, teen, and adult students to utilize what they have learned in class. We love our new larger dojo and hope to see more new students soon! Sensei cultivates an environment of discipline, respect and honor, all tenets that our young people need to see more of in society. We are very pleased to have our son here!

I have been taking private lessons with Billy for over 2 years focusing initially on striking, with some jiu jitsu, then progressing to feeling confident to take, so far, 2 amateur MMA fights. I am 45 years of age and been exposed to many excellent instructors in different occupational specialties. I rate Billy as an excellent instructor based off his fighter IQ from experience as a Professional MMA Fighter and his experience on the Ultimate Fighter, his ability to break that experience down into learning blocks and communicate them effectively to a novice fighter, and his level of maturity in always staying positive and professional when dealing with his students. I am confident fighters at any skill level would benefit from Billy's knowledge and experience!
