Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Let's see where you are and what your goals are! I use the Rubank Method books as well as other solo literature appropriate for recitals. I hold two recitals a year that will challenge you and be fun for you and your guests.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Cal State University, Fullerton. I studied with Kalman Bloch, Los Angeles philharmonic Principal Clarinetist.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$25/half hour or $40/hour
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching at a Military Base in Okinawa, Japan in 1994.
What types of students have you worked with?
I teach instrumental lessons to young students through adult students. I also have several years of experience working with special ed students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I enjoy teaching the youngest students recorder before transitioning them to flute or clarinet. This gives them a fun way to learn music before their hands are big enough for bigger/heavier instruments.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Don't wait! Jump in. Make sure you have a working instrument before taking lessons. I can help you find one that will work for you or help you find a repairman to get your instrument in working condition. Make sure you have a music stand and a pencil handy--you're ready to start lessons.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are your musical goals? Do you want to join a marching band? Do you want to play in your church orchestra? Do you want to sit first chair in your band? Or is this a time for a new hobby? Perhaps join a jazz band? I can help you get there. Do you work well on Zoom, or are you better working in person? I teach from my home in Lawrenceville, so if distance is a factor, perhaps you could do lessons mostly on-line but have in-person lessons every once in a while.
