Hi everyone! My name is Dave Lockwood.  I’ve been teaching guitar lessons in Duluth full time for about 10 years. I’ve come across just about every type of student, and in that time, I’ve learned how to explain things to people in a way that they finally get it. I’ve learned how to give people just the right amount of push to keep them on track with their goals. Even after almost 30 years of being a guitar player, I still get excited about playing and listening to music. That’s what I enjoy most about teaching – showing students how exciting it can be. Come join the fun!I'm new to this site, so I don't ... View Profile

I teach to the student's taste whenever I can: I personally choose the pieces we work on personally, and make such decisions to individually/for each student. Therefore, I choose songs the student is explicitly expressed interest in whenever such choices are fit and able to be applied to the subject matter. I make a specific effort to select music the student has expressly communicated interest in, whether it be the song itself, its artist, or even its genre, I do the best I can.  Secondly, I mostly work with kids. I find them to be more challenging and more rewarding as students (no offense to adults, I hope). I feel the same about teen ... View Profile

Charles Williams Guitar Lessons

Charles Williams Guitar Lessons

My teaching approach: My approach is simple: I ask the student what their goals are and then we map out an approach to meet those goals. The most common method is to learn music/songs by their favorite artists and use the music as a vehicle to identify weakness to focus on improving. For improvising, working on learning by ear is heavily emphasized. For classical, or playing songs from books, then written materials are relied on more. I teach all styles on electric and acoustic and I am a specialist in the gypsyjazz style of Django Reinhardt.A native of Atlanta, Charles received an AA from Emory and a BM in classical guitar from GSU. Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.
