Happiness In The Kitchen With Holly Houg
About
My goal is to inspire you to eat healthy & learn to love cooking! I love to make cooking fun, easy, healthy & budget-friendly so you can spend more time with your family around the dinner table & so you feel good. I love to use the freshest ingredients possible & cook whole food, not from a can or a box or a bag! Once I started eating this way, I've found I have lots more energy, easier to maintain my weight, & feel so much younger!
Life is way too short to make the same recipe twice! That's why I'm constantly trying new recipes!
Come to one of my cooking classes where I'll teach you how to make healthy cooking fun, easy, quick & budget-friendly!
I've been cooking for other people for 18 years and teaching people how to cook for the past 3 years. I specialize in kids cooking classes. In the summer, I offer 3 cooking camps in June and individual classes all throughout the summer, usually twice a week. I teach my classes in Urbandale. I also offer cooking classes for birthday parties, health seminars, lunch & learns, etc. I am willing to travel to you for the birthday parties, health seminars, lunch & learns, etc.
It is extremely rewarding to hear back from students or parents of students who have been trying or cooking new things at home. I love it when people come to my classes as picky eaters but come home with new recipes that they love.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I give them individual attention and cater to their specific dietary needs.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor's degree in elemetary education and have been 11 years of teaching experience. I have been a Pampered Chef consultant for almost 18 years. I've been teaching kids cooking camps for 5 years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
For adults, it depends on if it is a demonstration class or a hands-on cooking experience. The cost is going to be slightly higher if it is a hands-on cooking experience. Either way, you get to eat what we make in class! Also, the cost is more for an individual, but if you get a friend or several friends to join you, then the cost comes down per person.
I also offer about one class per month to kids and those classes are hands-on with a small group of 6-8 kids and the cost is $30 per class. The kids get to eat what they make!
How did you get started teaching?
I had been cooking for other people for years with Pampered Chef parties, but in January of 2014 I was asked to do some healthy food demonstrations at a health conference and people in the audience asked if I taught additional cooking classes that they could come to, so I started offering classes for adults. Then I realized the demands for kids cooking classes were even greater, so I started offering those. The need for a cooking camp instructor came up so I started offering those as well.
What types of students have you worked with?
Kids ages 5-18 and adults of all ages.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I absolutely love it when my students discover new foods that they had never tried before, but enjoy.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone who teaches healthy classes. I know of so many who teach classes that use boxed mixes or recipes that are full of sugar and I feel like people, kids especially, need to learn how to eat vegetables, etc. My classes are healthy and don't use processed foods. I also cater to dietary restrictions and food allergies.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Are the classes hands-on? How many people are in your classes? Do we get to taste the food we make? Do we get to take the recipes home?
