About

PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO TAKE LESSONS: [email protected]

I have been playing french horn for 14 years and teaching private lessons for 6 years. I have taught students of all levels and backgrounds, from beginner to advanced.

I am an arranger and composer as well, arranging and composing music for french horn ensembles (mostly) but other isntruments as well.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from Oklahoma State University and a Master's Degree in Horn Performance from the University of Redlands.

You can view my website, jacobwhitehorn.com, for information on me!

I love being able to both perform and teach the french horn, as well as write and arrange music. It is a creative outlet for me, and many others, that is extremely fulfilling and engaging. Even though these aspects are "work", it often does not feel that way because of the joy it brings to both the teacher and the students.

Frequently asked questions

I approach each student differently and meet them exactly where the start with me. The first lesson is establishing a baseline, where are you at in your music making journey and what are some immediate things to work on.

At this point, I also get to know the student and ask them what their goals and/or dreams are with their instrument. From there, I can develop a lesson plan on how to approach their goals and we can hit the ground running.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance (Horn) and a Master's Degree in Horn Performance.

I have 10 years of composition and arranging experience. I have had a piece performed and recorded on CD, as well as being published.

My standard rate is $25 per half hour for lessons.

I began teaching during my Bachelor's degree as I pursued a Music Education degree. As time went on I realized I only wanted to teach and play french horn, therefore I switched to a Music Performance degree. I began teaching local middle school and high school students during my education and it progress from there. Since then, I have taught trumpet and french horn lessons at various levels, as well as given masterclasses at different high schools.

I have worked with beginners (5th or 6th grade) through the collegiate level.

Recently I won the audition for 4th Horn with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra in Dubuque, Iowa. After two degrees and many hours of practice, I was very happy and proud of my success in the audition because it can often taken many years before having a successful audition.

First of all, I would get to know their teaching style and see if it fits your needs. Taking a trial lesson would be a good way to do this. Second, find a teacher who is passionate about teaching and playing the horn. Lastly, go in with an open mind and have fun.

Students should think about both short term and long term goals. Where do you see yourself with the horn by the end of the semester? Where do you see yourself with the horn in one year? Are you participating in any contests or concerts? Students should also think about what kind of player or musician they want to be? Now, all of these questions may not be necessary for a beginner, but they are important to think about none the less.
