Flying Pig Fiddle & Banjo
About
I teach old-time fiddle and claw hammer banjo entirely by ear, making brief mp3 recordings during the session for study at home. I adjust my teaching to the individual, doing my best to make learning fast, efficient and fun. We sponsor jam sessions for those interested in playing with others. I have fiddles and banjos available for sale or rent with option to buy.
Introducing the joy of making music to anyone who wants to participate. I've had the pleasure of working with students from age two through ninety five, most having no experience. I've yet to meet anyone who wanted to play fiddle or banjo who couldn't.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
New students usually come away from the first session able to play a recognizable old-time fiddle or banjo tune. Progress is encouraged with patience, gentle humor and the presence of a collie.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing the fiddle since 1974, and performing from Portland, Maine to Portland Oregon since 1988.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Weekly half hour lessons are $22 each, payable by the month in advance. Full hours are $35, same payment schedule.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching in 1998, to support a free range pasture farrowing pig farm in Iowa. When a few years later the ethanol industry drove the price of corn through the roof, the pigs went to town and I turned to teaching and performing music full time.
