Craig Hetrick is a highly experienced performer and teacher of all things drums and percussion. He has been the Assistant Principal Timpanist and Percussionist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for over twenty-nine years, Adjunct Professor of Percussion at Butler University for twenty-five years, and a private teacher for some forty years. In addition, he was a protege of Jim Chapin and specializes in drum set, teaching all styles from jazz and chart reading to Top 40 and rock and roll.

I love teaching drums and percussion! Having grown up with 2 music teachers as parents helped to give me a passion for teaching. The feeling of watching someone learn and progress on the instrument and derive joy from it is really wonderful!

    Frequently asked questions

I am currently the Assistant Principal Timpanist and Percussionist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (since 1992). I have toured the United States as a drummer with Perry Como, Johnny Mathis, and Bob Hope. I'm also an experienced teacher with over forty years of teaching private students, including at Butler (current) and Indiana Universities. I hold a Master of Music degree from the Indiana University Jacob's School of Music and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Delaware.

Prior to winning my current position with the ISO, I was both the Principal Percussionist of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Timpanist of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic Orchestra beginning in 1988. I also performed extensively with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra from 1986-88, including a West Coast USA tour, a stop at Carnegie Hall and a CD recording conducted by David Zinman. In 2013, I performed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Louis Langree.

I have taught students ranging in age from 10 to 60 and in skill level from beginners to advanced students and professionals preparing for collegiate or professional auditions. My lessons are completely customized to meet the abilities, interests and goals of each individual student. While I'm happy to teach students at any level who want to learn the drums for any reason, many of my advanced students have been accepted at prestigious music schools throughout the country and/or have gone on to professional careers in orchestras, military bands, as drum set players and as school and private teachers as well. Whatever level you're at and whatever your goals with lessons, I'm confident I can help you achieve them.
