Seckman Music is Wichita's favorite place to learn music. Our most favorite part of teaching is making connections with our kiddos and being an important part of their week. It's always the best when we see kids leaving out school with a smile plastered on their face.

Tina F. says, " Three of my children have studied under Mrs. Toews since 2004. She started with my older son in 8th grade, and the two younger children started when they were in 1st or 2nd grade. She stresses good habits and techniques early on, so her students have a good foundation to build on. She has high expectations for her students, and is very encouraging to help them meet them. She is strict about practicing, but she also rewards the students for practicing well. She has regular recitals, as well as group lessons, and she has her students participate in local competitions as they are able. My youngest is now a senior in high school. She has progressed extremely well under Deborah's training. It has been a joy to have my children in her studio. Her studio is in a separate room in her home, and she does not take calls or do other things during lessons. She has always been punctual. My husband and I feel we have made a very wise investment by having her for our children's piano teacher." Read more

Your Piano Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

Ryan B.
Greg was a fantastic teacher who was both flexible and patient with my work schedule. His patience persisted during our lessons as he critiqued my playing in a positive way and helped me become a better violinist. I would recommend Selah Music Studio for any online lessons as well as adult beginners seeking a music teacher.

It is an honor to share that our son has been learning along side Ms. Julia at Accent Music Academy for over 3 years!! We love the option to hold weekly lessons from the convenience of our home. Ms. Julia always arrives with a fun-loving energy that makes everyone in the house want to be in attendance for piano lesson time! She is very patient and encouraging; that’s for both the student and parents guiding young learners/early beginners. As a parent with no previous knowledge or experience playing any instrument, her patience and passion means a great deal! She is very knowledgeable and thorough in explaining the material! If we have questions between our meetings (which is rare because she is very detailed in explaining), she gladly assists to keep us on track. Another beautiful thing I’ve noticed about Ms. Julia over the years, is how well she knows her students. She has the gift of being able to balance knowing when to challenge her students, and knowing when it’s an “off-day” with learning. Our little ones have difficult days too...whether it be during the hectic holiday seasons or busier times during the school year, etc. She recognizes they are trying their best and respects her students whole heartedly! Being mindful of this, allows for the passion of learning to continue! It is a blessing to be in her care and to see how our son has grown musically! Our son LOVES learning with Ms. Julia and always looks forward to seeing her! Even our youngest son is excited for the day he can begin learning with Ms. Julia!
