I specialize in teaching beginning students of all ages on a variety of instruments. I've been performing for more than 40 years and teaching for more than 20 years. Winner of numerous banjo competitions and also named Teacher Of The Year amoungst a group of 60 teachers. I especially love Appalchian music of the Southern states. In addition to Banjo I have regular students learning Piano, Guitar, Mandolin, Dulcimer, Ukulele and Harmonica. I recieved my undergrad degree in Music Composition from Principia College and have also studied Jazz Theory at the Dick Grove School of Music.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Finding a new student's individual learning style is very important. Each student has a wide variety of unique learning skills. Identifying and developing these skills is critical to learning how to play and enjoy making music. I focus on learning songs as soon as possible through the building of physical mechanics of playing an instrument one step at a time. I supplement learning songs with music theary when the interesest emerges. Each student has unique talents and tastes and I really enjoy developing these skills and exploring good music together.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I began studing music formally at a young age at the Ossining School of Music with Marvin Drucker. I've studied theory from grade school through college and beyond. In the past ten years alone I've delivered more than twenty-thousand lessons on a variety of instruments. I've taught individuals, groups, ensembles and a wide varety of special needs student of all ages. I've produced, recorded, performed and composed music for film and stage. I have publiched several books of Clahammer Banjo Tablature.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My rate for in-home teaching is $70 per hour. Skype lessons are $35/30min, $50/45min, and $60 for an hour. Ensemble coaching is custom priced.
How did you get started teaching?
I got my start teaching as people approached me after performaces and began asking for lessons. I gave my first banjo lesson in college.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of every age from 5 to 75. I've coached ensembles. I've also worked with a wide variety of disabilites and special needs students. Every student receives a custom, indiviualized approach.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My young stringband ensemble of 12 year-olds performed at a fund raiser at Harvard Stadium in support of returning disabled troops. The kids sang harmonies on a variety of songs as well as pleying bluegrass solos.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher that has broad expeience teaching and playing the style of music that most interests you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1. How much time can I commit to practicing, listening and learning every day?
2. What are my musical goals? What songs would I like to learn?
3. Would I like to play these songs for my firends or for an audience?
