Scene Study With Brian Atkinson
About
What is a beat?
What is a character chioce?
What are stakes?
What is a want?
With over 25 years of acting experience including several films currently on Amazon, multiple television shows currently running (CSI, Party of Five, and 9-1-1), I can help you answer these questions.
I have been lucky enough to enjoy success in my craft and to study under some amazing teachers. My hope is to give back to the art that has given me so much.
It's been a blast working with several friends and colleagues on plays, commercial auditions, and monologues. The chance to share what I do and how I do it with students is very exciting to me.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
There are four steps in beginning class
- Free Student Consultation-
The student will prepare and perform a monologue or scene they wish to study.
-Beats and Pacing
The student will break down the script using emotional beats. We will go over how those indiviual beats connect, and push the characters overall goal/want
-Analysis of Circumstance-
We will apply a technique of Analysis of Circumstance to overall piece using a 10 question system to help make specific grounded acting choices.
-Full Performace
We will then apply the Analysis of Circumstance to the individual *beats* to help flush out character wants and needs. And finally the student will perform their final piece.
Continued work will include helping the student gain a stronger ability to recognize beats, to make more interesting in-depth scene choices, and to more effectively use the Analysis of Circumstances as a foundation for their art.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Pricing is $50 Per hour.
For larger works outside of single scene study, from several-scene auditions to entire play prep requiring multiple days, the hourly rate can be negotiated.
How did you get started teaching?
I've been working with friends and colleagues in Los Angeles for the past 10 years on audition/play prep, scene study and character development. Having recently moved to the Boston area I'm excited to share what I've learned.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with film actors, voice artists and theater performers. Many of which have booked national campaigns, television roles and studio films. Just last year a friend of mine whom I helped prep will have a role in the upcoming film Top Gun.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Most recently I had the opportunity to work the Academy Award Winner Rami Malek in the Dramatic Podcast "BLACKOUT" which won a Webby for best Dramatic Podcast.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Should you decide to work with me I would advise you to be open and ready to have some fun. ACTING IS FUN after all!!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The questions you should ask yourself before beginning this class are:
-Do I want to take my craft seriously? Acting is a fun and beautiful art but without a proper work ethic it can be a frustrating experience
Am I open to new experiences? Students may start my class with existing techniques or their own artistic ideas. While my process will help to build on a students' current process they must be open to trying something new to achieve an amazing scene.
