L M. says, "Debra is a wonderful trainer who helped me become a more confident professional speaker. During the pandemic, I took both her Storytelling and TED Talks classes and later worked 1:1 with her to prepare to be a featured workshop presenter at a public speaking conference. The storytelling workshop I presented used techniques and frameworks I learned from Debra, and attendees told me afterward that it was one of the most engaging and useful sessions they had attended. What I appreciate about Debra is not only her expertise, but the care and encouragement she brings to every session. With Debra’s coaching, I performed well in a recent audition and am now a cast member with an improv company. I cannot stress enough how prepared and supported I felt throughout the 1:1 training process. If you are looking to give a TED Talk and become a stronger professional presenter, I recommend Debra Lovemore. She is reliable, knowledgeable, encouraging, and absolutely worth every penny. Working with her was an investment in myself that continues to pay off every time I step in front of an audience." Read more

Your list does not have a category for me. The closest it comes is acting lessons. I do not teach acting. I am an acting coach, which is very different. When I was active doing it it was because other actors would come to me and ask for help. So, what I would do is basically illustrate that there was more than one path to get to where they needed to be. I would bring things out of them that they did not know were there. Sometimes it was an intense experience. I was a lauded actor that had no intention of getting into coaching, but too many people kept asking for my help and offering to pay me. After helping a bunch of people for free I decide...

Your Acting Classes questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do acting classes cost?

Acting classes cost $25 to $65 per hour on average for group classes or $50 to $150+ per hour to hire a private acting coach. Prices vary depending on where you live and the instructor's experience and reputation. Acting studios that offer ongoing weekly classes typically charge $150 to $350 per month.

Acting courses and workshops can cost as little as $200 to as much as $2,800+, depending on the content, number of sessions, and the instructor's demand. Some acting workshops are short, 1- or 2-day intensive classes focusing on one aspect of the industry, while other programs last 4 to 8 weeks and cover several topics, methods, and techniques.

Most studios offer a free trial class so you can get a feel for the teaching style and decide if it's right for you.

Are online acting classes worth it?

Online acting classes are worth it if you want to pursue acting and are unable to attend acting classes in person. With online video calling platforms like Zoom and Skype, you can now study acting with the best in the industry from the comfort of your own home! Many reputable acting coaches—including those right here on Lessons—now offer online acting classes and teach the same methods and techniques that they teach in the studio.

Do you need acting classes to become an actor?

You technically don't need acting classes to become an actor. However, acting classes can help you gain confidence, learn new methods and techniques, analyze scenes and scripts, and build new industry connections and relationships. Acting classes can also teach you about the business side of acting, which is as important as acting itself.

How long do acting classes take?

Acting class length varies depending on the studio and the type of class. Some studios have 2-hour classes, while others have classes lasting 3 to 5 hours. Depending on the location, acting classes may be offered in several formats, such as ongoing weekly classes, weekend intensive workshops, and training programs that can run anywhere from 2 to 8+ weeks.

What skills do you need to be an actor?

While the necessary skillset varies depending on the type of acting you pursue (think Broadway theater vs. TV commercials vs. film), all actors need a broad range of skills to portray the expressions and emotions of a character so effectively that they temporarily transport the audience to a world where the actor is indeed that character. This often involves:

  • Memorizing lines and stage cues
  • Analyzing scripts and scenes
  • Developing a character's emotions and physical expressions
  • Working with other actors, directors, and production crews
  • Adapting to unexpected changes and situations
  • Speaking clearly and adjusting one's voice to align with the character
  • Learning and developing different acting methods and techniques
  • Being comfortable in front of an audience or camera

Reviews for Chelsea acting classes

Recent success stories from people in the Chelsea area.
Linda Z.
I initially reached out to Debra to try out her free acting class. Her reviews were outstanding, and I figured I had nothing to lose. During our first phone conversation, she asked thoughtful questions about why I wanted to pursue acting and explained that the introductory lesson would be complimentary and was to see whether we would be a good fit for each other. That immediately increased my trust in her because it showed that she genuinely cared about the student experience and the quality of work we would be doing together. During the first class, I immediately sensed that she had real, working knowledge of the industry and was also an experienced teacher. She wasted no time in getting to the core of the work, and I left the session feeling like I had gained real insight and couldn’t wait to learn more from her. So, I signed up for a 40-session package. About halfway through our sessions, I started to realize that what I needed most was not actually acting training. While I had some successes I was very proud of, I was also running into internal barriers that felt bigger than what acting techniques could help me conquer. I talked to Debra about my concerns and she was completely open and understanding. She told me that she was developing this new course called SPEAK HUMAN and offered to tailor my remaining sessions to my needs using her extensive knowledge and experience in exactly the areas I was interested in: setting boundaries, feeling more empowered, building confidence, and being more true to myself. That shift ended up being life-changing for me. In our sessions, we practiced real life scenarios where I struggled to maintain boundaries. She coached me through multiple approaches and I practiced them, just like in acting class, except now I’m practicing to be a more powerful and true version of me. What surprised me was not just the effectiveness of the lessons themselves, but how much I learned from observing Debra’s mindset and way of moving through the world. She approached situations from a place of assured self-respect rather than anxiety and uncertainty. She didn’t over-explain herself or make herself appear small. Gradually, I could feel my daily anxiety decrease as the number of tools in my toolbox increased. I slowed down and made decisions that were more thought out rather than through reflex, driven by anxiety. I felt more confident and clear-headed. It felt like I was introduced to a completely different blueprint for how a self-respecting person could think, respond, and carry herself. The changes affected areas of my life that I didn’t expect. Prior to our sessions I had low self-confidence. I wanted to get back into the work-force but felt unmotivated and anxious about my qualifications. After my SPEAK HUMAN training with Debra, I’ve been sending out job applications, revisiting my past experiences and seeing them through a much more healthy lens. Instead of only remembering failures and shortcomings, I am filled with renewed vigor, optimism, and peace with myself. For anyone who wants to try acting or improve their craft, who feels lost and like they haven’t reached their potential, who wants to improve communication, become a better version of themselves, and navigate life with more clarity and self-respect, I highly recommend working with Debra. If her style resonates with you, the experience can change your life.

Milton, as a director/writer, is open to collaboration and works with the actor’s strengths to guide the performance. I appreciate his willingness to listen as well as give direction especially when working on a play he wrote. Not all director/writers can do that equally.

Wonderfully imaginative, and gifted comedically, as well as understanding the value of props given his background as a magician, mime, and storyteller; a man of theater with impeccable taste and aesthetics, and appreciation of world culture. Takes the best of what you have to offer and makes it better. What more can you ask for? Some of my best theatrical experiences have been spent working with Lee Faulkner.
