Huakai L. says, "Bowen's music theory instruction was an absolute revelation! His unique teaching style went beyond the norm, taking the time to understand my musical background and tailoring lessons accordingly. The incorporation of homework assignments helped reinforce my understanding and practice, making me more confident in applying theory to my music. What sets Bowen apart is his ingenious use of songs from my favorite singers as teaching examples. This not only made learning enjoyable but also illustrated practical applications of theory in music I love. His passion for teaching shone through every session, creating a warm and motivating atmosphere. If you seek a music theory instructor who cares about your progress and makes learning a delight, Bowen is the perfect choice. I couldn't be more thrilled with my musical growth under his guidance!" Bobby L. says, "My 9-year-old son and I had an incredibly positive experience working with piano teacher Anna for his lessons. There were several aspects I appreciated about her teaching style and approach. First and foremost, Anna's patience and understanding were remarkable. She made learning the piano a fun and enjoyable experience for my son. Her ability to adapt her teaching methods to his age and skill level ensured that he remained engaged and motivated throughout the lessons. Anna also had a knack for breaking down complex concepts into simpler, more digestible parts. This made it easier for my son to grasp fundamental music theory and piano techniques. Her clear explanations and visual aids helped him understand musical concepts more effectively. These qualities not only helped my son progress in his piano skills but also fostered a genuine love for playing the piano." Read more

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?

Inessa has been my piano teacher for over 10 years. Her passion for sharing her love of music is truly remarkable. While she is Suzuki certified, she also listens to her students and adapts her curriculum accordingly. Inessa is technically strong and her only goal is for you to enjoy music.

Alley is an excellent piano teacher! She is talented, engaging, patient and fun-loving. She understands children and seems to genuinely enjoy her time with my son. He is 9 years old and since beginning to work with Alley he looks forward to his piano lessons. It is wonderful to see his sense of accomplishment as his piano playing improves over time. We highly recommend Alley!

Ok so listen, I’m a 34 year old that woke up one day and decided to take piano lessons. I feel like this paints the picture. It’s scientifically proven that it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks. But taking lessons with Greg has been the opposite of that. He’s patient. He’s funny. His teaching style isn’t too stuffy so he makes you feel relaxed. He’s definitely taught this old dog new tricks. I would definitely recommend him to anyone of any age to take lessons with him.
