About

Over 20 years of experience teaching voice to students in the New England region. Students come from various musical backgrounds and look to achieve several types of goals with their singing: professional, semi-professional, church work, college audition prep, beginners looking for expertise, etc.

I am a National Winner of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions, a consummate guest soloist with various orchestras throughout the New England region, a consistent performer with The Boston Pops Orchestra, a student of some of the finest vocal instructors and vocal coaches in the U.S., and a Masterclass Instructor. In addition, I love to share my love for choral directing, with semi-professional, college and high school choirs alike, as well as my credentials as a Minister of Music with various churches and denominations in the area.

I enjoy helping singers of all ages and levels to achieve their goals. Goals are set during the first couple of lessons and we will absolutely achieve them if they are realistic.

Jane is an excellent and supportive instructor. She has so much foundational knowledge of voice and anatomy, and I have been amazed at the various ways she uses pedagogy, metaphors, and even some yoga/physical exercises to help me understand the elements of voice. And the languages!! I digress... As context I am an adult learner and my background is in learning science (focus on math), but gosh, I have had so many insights about learning from the other side as a student in a foreign subject. Singing is so different than anything Ive ever done, but I feel so lucky to have Jane as my teacher, not only because I have seen so much improvement in my singing ability in 1 year, but because even when I feel unsure or know I didnt do something perfectly, I can count on her to cheer me on and celebrate good progress.

Jane Shivick, my voice teacher, really takes the time to understand my way of singing. She helps me implement voice strategies in a way that I can understand and work on implementing them. I look forward to my lessons!

Jane Shivick is an extraordinary voice teacher. What is especially remarkable about her is how excellent she is at diagnosing and then solving problems in vocal technique. I first started with Jane when a friend told me ,”I used to have a lot of problems with tension in my jaw and now I don’t anymore.” I can say ditto to that. She knows a lot about the physiology of singing and is able to communicate that so effectively. I continue to grow in feeling how to sing physically and in understanding good vocal technique in an intellectual way. It makes all my singing, even at the extremes of my range, easier, more fun, and makes studying with Jane exciting! I have learned so much that it astounds me when I think about it. She is also a master at carefully layering her teaching to deal with just one or two key issues at a time and then building to more sophisticated layers of study. She is an excellent role model, a consummate professional about how she studies music herself, and her expectations as a teacher are ambitious, even for those of us who study as a hobby rather than a vocation. She is sensitive to the individual needs and personalities of the students she teaches and seems to know when to push and when to praise.
In addition, she is a really nice person.

    Frequently asked questions

Always schedule a consultation with a potential voice teacher before making any permanent decisions. I love to work and talk with a potential student firstly to see if we are a good fit for one another.

If a student enjoys their time and feels we are a good fit, then I suggest finding a suitable lesson time given our schedules.

I have been fortunate to have studied with many of the elite vocal instructors, coaches, and conductors in our country. I have also traveled to Europe to work with prestigious vocal coaches in Germany. I majored in vocal performance in college and was accepted to the Aspen Music Festival as a member of the voice program and Opera Theatre Center for two summers. The faculty in Aspen are mostly Juilliard faculty and staff in addition to other highly sought-after artists and instructors. I continue to network with these people to this day.

I charge one price for a 30 minute lesson. The price is doubled for a 60 minute lesson.

I began teaching during my last couple of years as an undergraduate college student. I was eager to teach and learn about how to help others who loved to share the gift of singing. I began teaching by offering private lessons through my church.

I continue to work with students who've never had a voice lesson, students in need of a teacher who is an expert technician, students who seek professional and semi-professional singing careers, church soloists, students who sing to better themselves, and students who seek acceptance to prestigious undergraduate and master's degree programs in vocal performance, musical theatre, and opera.

Watching my voice student make her Symphony Hall debut in Boston with Keith Lockhart and The Boston Pops Orchestra.

If you are serious, then my singing school would be an excellent choice to help you become a well-rounded performer. Personally, I am a skilled technician with an excellent ear as are my other staff members who are professionals in the field of music.
