Justin K. says, "I started taking lessons from David in the Summer of 2024 and am continuing to into the present. David’s knowledge of musical theory and composition as well as his expert abilities as an instructor make him an unrivaled choice for piano instruction. In just a few months under his tutelage I’ve gone from very new beginner playing rudimentary pieces to playing Bach. Not only is he an excellent, knowledgeable instructor though he is an absolute joy to meet with and talk to about anything and everything. If you’re considering piano lessons, do NOT pass up on David." Read more

Hi, my name is Franzi. As a music teacher in private and pre-schools, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that music has on young minds. Teaching children how to play musical instruments not only enhances their cognitive abilities but also fosters creativity, discipline, and emotional expression. Over the years, I have seen students light up with joy as they master a new note, a song, or an instrument, reinforcing my belief that music education is a gift that every child deserves. Because of the fact that my schedule became more and more overwhelming, I needed to find other music teachers to take on students, hence the idea to crea

Hello there! I have a college degree in music, have taught dance since 2015, and am a native Spanish speaker. In terms of music, I can teach how to read music and play chords, but that's about as far as I can go when it comes to piano and guitar. I am not classically trained in those areas, so I do not know how to play finger-style guitar or how to play with both hands on piano. In terms of dance, I specialize in Latin Dance (Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Cumbia). I am a Zumba instructor as well and have choreographed for over 80 weddings and quinceañeras. I like to focus on what the student actually wants to learn, so my teaching style is

Tyler B. says, "The suggested material is developed well and the course pace seems to be strong so far. Of course we all want to progress quickly. I would say that it’s important to build the right foundation first. That takes time. The foundation is in progress for me personally and the teaching has made it easy for me to stay excited about learning." Read more

Your Piano Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

Although I was very young, I will always remember the Altoid stacks and the handwritten and illustrated book about Christmas mice :) thank you for being there for my very first introduction to music and for sharing a deep love for Italianness!

Tim is a reliable, positive, and realistic cello instructor for my son. My son switched to Tim this past Fall after working with a different instructor for several years. My son, who has ADHD struggles, also switched instruments at the same time. With these music instruction changes, my son is finding a lot of success and joy. Thanks, Tim!

Malena is patient, encouraging, flexible, generous, and an inspiration. She is everything you could ever ask for in a piano teacher. Every time I come across a lesson, song, or technique that feels frustrating or confusing, she finds an innovative way to tackle it or explain it. I took lessons when I was a kid and wanted to get back into piano for 14 years, but I found it extremely difficult to find anyone who offered lessons outside of the standard 9-5 work week for a reasonable rate. Not only does Malena offer flexible times for lessons, but her rates are totally feasible, and she's even more flexible now with the option of video lessons. I've grown as a piano player by leaps and bounds in the last year alone, and have had wonderfully positive experiences with our showcase recitals (even with my immense stage fright). I adore Malena and can't recommend her enough.
