Jk F. says, "I am adult student, who came back to piano after decades of not playing. My 9-year-old daughter and I take lessons together with Dr. Lee, and we appreciate her patience and encouragement, teaching style and how she helps us make beautiful music. She is passionate about helping you play each piece how it's truly meant to be played. I have fallen in love with the beauty and joy of piano, and I thank my lucky stars that I found the BEST teacher I could have asked for. By the way, Dr. Lee is also a very nice person, and she is accommodating and kind when you have unavoidable changes in schedule." Read more

Suzanne A. says, "Narciso has given me the structure and discipline to restart my musical studies after many years of not playing the piano. He is positive, encouraging and demanding, but understands the time constraints of the working adult- some practice weeks are better than others! He pays close attention to choosing appropriate material, works consistently on skill-building techniques, and handles my inevitable frustrations with sensitivity and thoughtfulness. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have found his studio and cannot recommend him highly enough. " Read more

Jay W. says, "My daughter, Vivian has been taking piano lessons from Ms. Lisa Thomas for last 4 years. Vivian describes Ms. Lisa as fun, friendly, patient and the best teacher. Vivian's favorite part of Ms. Lisa is that when she starts new songs, she often demonstrates the piece, record it and email it to her so she can listen and review how it supposed to sound like. Vivian likes to play Hymn during offering at our small church. Ms. Lisa has been great in helping to perfect the songs. I highly recommend Ms. Lisa as a piano teacher and am envious of her future students who can experience her contagious passion and love of music first hand. " Read more

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

Dr. Lee is an exceptional teacher! Both of my kids, ages 5 and 4, did not have any prior experience with piano, but they have learned and picked up their piano skills really fast after a couple sessions with Dr. Lee. They also start to play piano as a hobby at home. Highly recommended!

Narciso Solero is an exceptional piano teacher. He gives students an excellent musical foundation, teaching them scales and arpeggios, music theory, sight-reading, and how to play with musical expression. He trains them to be ready for performances and competitions. The students have the opportunity to perform in multiple recitals each year, including a concerto recital. Receptions after the recitals create community among the families of the students. Mr Solero is organized. He maps out the year, performance dates, competition opportunities, and holiday breaks, in a calendar at the start of the school year. It is so nice to know in October what the recital date will be in February. He also uses organization to teach the students in a method that is easy for them to follow. The students are able to take ownership of their own progress and feel a sense of accomplishment after each time they practice. Mr. Solero taught our sons how to study and how to break down an overwhelming project into smaller pieces. He also taught them to work steadily toward their goals. Our younger son, who stayed in the studio for a couple of years, has a lifelong love of music and truly appreciates the time he spent in Mr. Solero’s studio. Our older son credits his 7 years in the Narciso Solero Piano Studio with preparing him for college auditions and acceptance into conservatory. We all highly recommend Narciso Solero Piano Studio.

Lisa is a fantastic teacher. She really takes the time to understand her students' unique strengths and talents and teach to those strengths. At the same time, she understands her students' challenges and areas that may need improvement, and she helps students to address those areas with patience, support and creativity. My daughter has learned so much from Lisa and has grown tremendously as a musician while studying with her.

Working with Daniel is amazing. He goes above and beyond. When we started he took the time to focus on helping breaking some bad habits i had created while trying to learn by myself. For example, we went over posture, positioning of the guitar while playing and he even did performed some tweaks to my guitar to make it sound better. He is an expert about the instrument besides being an amazing player and for me that makes the entire difference between his service and the one provided by others.

I am an adult piano learner with a musical background in the voice especially. Aiesh is a kind and friendly teacher. She cares about the success of the student. I like the selection of books and other materials that she uses. For me it helps go over music theory well and solidifies it. Aiesh is good at pointing out when you need to play differently to match what is written in the music. She is very good at encouraging you both when you have done well and when you need to improve. I had a very positive experience!
