About

NHME, a 501c3 charitable nonprofit, provides homeschool musicians and other students without a music program an opportunity to learn, play, and experience quality, affordable, ensemble music-making with like-minded performers and expert instructors. We've been in the Southeast Michigan homeschooling and arts community for over twenty years; come join us! We have locations in Ann Arbor and Tecumseh.

It's Fun! At NHME, we focus solely on giving our students the best music-educational experience possible. Music is our core subject and only course of study, because it translates into more proficiency in problem solving, greater gains in creative thinking, and positive improvement in all other disciplines and intelligences. We regard music as a fundamental, foundational topic vital to any rigorous curriculum. Any proposed plan of study would be sorely lacking and incomplete without a musical component.

NHME taught me how much I love ensemble playing by being a place where the teachers were incredibly knowledgeable and encouraging, competition was healthy and not divisive, and the community was incredibly close-knit. In my nine years of being in NHME, I learned an incredible amount about music on various instruments, became more confident in myself, and met people who are now among my closest friends. NHME has a lot to offer to any homeschooler who thinks it might be cool to learn and make music with others, and I strongly recommend joining! NHME helped make me into the musician and person I am today, and I will always be grateful for that.

It’s NHME - National Homeschool Music Ensembles week at the TCA! December 2019 was the last time this group performed on our stage. Though it’s been a long 1.5 years, we are thrilled to welcome them back once again! #thetca #tca40years #musicreturnstothetca #welcomebackmusicstudents

    Frequently asked questions

We love new student musicians!  Read more about our beginning ensembles here: https://www.nhme.org/beginningdetails.html

Read more about how we teach and instruct here: https://www.nhme.org/philosophy.html

We're working musicians and degreed professionals in our fields of performance and education.  Find out more about us here: https://www.nhme.org/about.html

Tuition is $45 per ensemble monthly for each student learner.  16 hours of expert instruction is available to a student each month per class.  That amounts to $2.81 / hour.  More details are here: https://www.nhme.org/schedule.html

In the year 2000, a small group of homeschooling parents joined together for the purpose of adding a music component to their childrens’ plans of study.  Homeschooled musicians studying privately became bored playing solo all the time and desired ensemble experiences with a band or an orchestra.  So, we made our own!  Read more here: https://www.nhme.org/about.html

We work with any student musician that can attend our rehearsals per our scheduled times.  While formed for homeschoolers, our mission expanded to include students  outside traditional public / private settings that do not have access to an educational music program.

NHME holds an annual Spring Concert and an annual Winter Concert. We also participate in honors bands, solo & ensemble festivals, and play-along trips with local colleges / universities and community bands like the Adrian City Band and the Straits Area Concert Band in Mackinaw.

Playing with a group like in a band or in an orchestra is a lot more fun than just playing solo or learning privately.  Come join us!

Which instrument sounds exciting to learn?  That's the one to pick!  And why not learn a second?
