About
At the heart of traditional Okinawan karate-do are the principles of peace, harmony, and respect for others. Sensei Iha actively promotes the concepts of friendship, cooperation and learning among his students worldwide. One of the primary goals of training at Original Okinawan Karate of Holt is the perfection of character. Learning self-control is of the utmost importance in learning self-defense. Sensei Iha stresses that students must learn to work effectively with a variety of partners to advance in their studies. This requires a mutual attitude of cooperation and partnership. Participation in competitive events is not emphasized.
Positive thinking, confidence, cooperation and respect for others are some of the qualities people achieve through studying karate-do. The ultimate goal of karate study is physical and mental self-improvement. The effects of this study are evident in our students and seeing their progress as karate practitioners and as individuals is priceless.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Class instruction takes into account the abilities of each individual, taking into consideration their age, size, strength, skill level/ personality, and any personal limitations. Learning is step-by-step and advances in difficulty only when a student is ready. Everyone starts by learning basic combinations of kicks, punches and blocks through the practice of drills and basic kata. When a student can demonstrate they have learned their current level of skills, new and more complex kata, drills and exercises are added. We realize children learn in different ways and at different paces based on age and experience, we offer many class options to optimally meet their needs. Because the focus of Shido-kan karate is on self-improvement, not competition, students are taught to cooperate with and learn from their partners-helping each other and paying attention to each other's needs.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a practitioner of Okinawan Karate for over 30 years under Hanshi Seikichi Iha, 10th dan. I have taught this art for 27 years and independently at my own location since 2003. Through my years teaching, I have witnessed and learned from all sorts of personality types and seen students with variable obstacles in front of them they must overcome to succeed. I know what challenges can present themselves and have devoted my life to sharing this knowlegde with you and yours.
How did you get started teaching?
My karate journey did not start as a teacher, but rather as a student. Upon achieving my 1st degree black belt, I was responsible for teaching youth classes for Seikichi Iha. From 1992 onwards, teaching along with practicing karate has been a major focus of mine and has blossomed into the program we offer you today.
