How did you get started teaching?
Was the highest ranking student during class times and was asked by Sensei to demonstrate several techniques for the class to practice. Became a frequent occurence with Sensei allowing me to teach class under his supervision. Soon he instructed me to teach class by myself 1- 2 days a week and have been teaching since then.
What types of students have you worked with?
For aikido, I have taught kids class (7-13 years old), as well as adult class. I have taught both male and female students.
For Tai Chi, I have worked with both sex and all my students are adults. I had students with physical limitations due to sickness or injuries and have worked with them and adjusted their practice within their abilities but giving them enough encouragements to strive for the goals they have set for themselves.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Ask to watch and observe a class they teach. Observe the teacher's way of teaching and how he/she relates to the students. Observe the students and check if they are confident and satisfied with the teacher. Finally talk to the teacher to check if he/ she is capable of helping you reach your goals under his/her guidance.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What is your goal in learning martial arts?
How much physical contact can you tolerate?
How much of your time are you willing to dedicate for training?
