Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
For complete beginners, I guide them through the steps of a proper setup. We work on their posture, holding the violin, and then we learn some basic songs that will help with technique. For students who already have some experience, I have them play scales for me and show me what music they last worked on. I may have them do some sight reading to gauge their level. Then I prescribe a method book, scales book, and appropriate etude book. We work on technique and growing musically!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing the violin and viola since she 9. I am currently being certified for K-12 strings and one semester away from a Bachelor of Music in Strings Education.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons are priced per lesson, but if you can commit to an entire semester I give you a discount. Payment is due at the end of each lesson.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students as young as 4 and as old as college age. I have worked with everything from complete beginners to advanced players.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My senior recital, where I performed the Forsyth Viola Concerto, Brahms's Second Viola Sonata, Trauermusik by Hindemith, and Bach's Fifth Suite.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Go with someone with the proper credentials that you like. Also make sure your teacher has knowledge of your skill level. Violin teachers are not one size fits all!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Do they have high standards? How much do they focus on proper technique? What qualifications do they have? Do they focus solely on solo repertoire or do they also work from method books and etudes?
