I have been a successful performer, composer, arranger and studio musician living and working in New York City for the last 30 years. I have been honored to have had many private students, some of whom have gone on to professional careers. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and levels and I do so with a specialized, personal approach. No two students are the same and no two students should be taught with identical plans. Above all my philosophy is that we "play" music. If you're not having fun, you're not playing the piano....

Heather G. says, "Valerie is so skilled at teaching musicianship, theory, and piano performance to students of all ages- my children took from the ages of 4 and 6 through graduation from high school, and now I take as an adult student. We appreciated Valerie's flexibility and understanding of scheduling make ups when special events or illness occurred with the children, and her flexible choice plan for summer lesson scheduling. Valerie instilled confidence in our children through her positive teaching methods, and life lessons such as dressing for and conducting themselves for recitals and auditions, writing music resumes for applications as they got older, and using their gift of musicianship to help others and provide enjoyment for family. They loved that Valerie cared about all of their interests and school work- that she wanted to help both of them become well rounded people, as well as great pianists. She became an important member of our family while the kids took lessons from her, and I'm so grateful that she teaches adult students so this "empty nester" can continue the joy of piano playing for years to come. Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

I have been working with Dr. Steve Fiess of High Range Piano for the last 10 months as an adult piano student, and I have been extremely satisfied with his instruction. I have been making great progress, and I’ve been improving faster than I have in the past with other teachers. Overall, Steve is a quiet, calm, all-around kind person. He is always encouraging, even when offering constructive criticism of my playing. I always look forward to my next lesson. After each lesson, I leave feeling good about my playing, and also like I received good feedback, so I know where I need to improve. Steve has been great at helping me select songs to play. As we move on to new pieces, the next one is always just the right difficulty--challenging enough to help me progress but always within reach with a little bit of work. He’s also always open to me bringing in pieces that I want to work on. I usually bring a few in, and he helps me decide which piece will be the best fit for my current skills. Steve’s depth and breadth of piano knowledge is also impressive. I often ask him questions about why a particular piece is written a particular way or some other detail about a piece. He always has a thorough answer that covers the relevant areas of music history, theory, and practice. I’ve never met another piano teacher who is so knowledgeable about the piano and piano music. It really helps to give some context to the music I’m playing and helps me understand it better. Overall, I’ve been very pleased, and I would not hesitate to recommend High Range Piano to anyone looking for a piano teacher.

Valerie is a an excellent teacher who pays attention to details in teaching us to develop skills in playing the piano. She encourages us to stretch ourselves and teaches at our skill level yet has high expectations of us to work toward advancing our skills. I have enjoyed my 4 years of learning from Valerie, and I plan to keep learning and developing my piano skills. I am very happy that I found her and have her as my piano teacher. I highly recommend Valerie to both adults and children.
