B.REED Dance
About
I am a former member of The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for 16 seasons. I am a graduate of The Juilliard School and performed with Ailey II before joining the first company. I am currently on the ballet faculty of The American Ballet Theater School and a teaching fellow for their National Training Curriculum. I successfully presented students for examinations for 4 years while teaching at The Harlem School of the Arts before being invited to join the faculty of ABT. I am also on faculty at The Institute of American Musical Theater where I teach Contemporary Dance. I do private movement coaching for actors and models. I teach all ages and especially have a passion for baby ballerinas and ballet princes. I believe in the magic of dance as not only a tool for expression but also for self growth and healing. Two quotes that I love and live by are from Alvin Ailey "Dance came form the people and should be delivered back to the people" and "It's 2% talent and 98% hard work. Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to know what it is that the student wants to work in and then I go from there pulling things out of my bag of tricks from Gyroknesis, floor barre, stretches and of course ballet.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
The Juilliard School
The Ailey School
ABT National Training Curriculum
Gyrotonic/Gyroknesis Certification
How did you get started teaching?
The Ailey Company and Ailey II both do extensive educational outreach and I knew then that I loved teaching and sharing art with others through education. After leaving Ailey I wanted to study a formalized pedagogy and did so through ABT through a scholarship provided by The Harlem School of the Arts.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with all types of students from very serious ballerinas, commercial/video dancers that want foundational ballet, actor, models and those just starting out.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are hoping to improve?
