About
Ours is a class where beginner and intermediate students may find that balance of nurturing and motivation to comfortably take them to the next level if they are consistent. We are conveniently located at 4450 Broadway at 191st Street in Manhattan (10040). You'll get a good workout in a class that's fun! This class has also put motivated students onstage at Harlem Hafla. Look for Harlem Hafla on Facebook and YouTube! Our website is www.sistersinsharqui.com.
Watching my students' progress and joy of movement is an amazing experience. It doesn't matter to me where you begin. Growth is the most important thing.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I take new students through the basic steps, transitions, isolations, walks and veil movements to fast-track their learning.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am actually a certified academic teacher so my process of explanation and breakdown---even the differentiation for various levels is unique. I have been belly dancing for over a dozen years. I had prior dance training in ballet, modern, West African and Caribbean dance but this is another realm and paradigm so I only count these most recent years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Classes are $20. for an hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I was a good student and performing a bit earlier than I would now recommend. My teachers would ask me to substitute when other teachers were absent and the reviews were all good.
What types of students have you worked with?
I typically get beginners and intermediates. I also teach choreographies so that students may dance on their own. We do student showcases at restaurants during the year. Our culminating event is Harlem Hafla, each Summer. You may Google it or look on YouTube for more information.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I would have to say that creating and seeing so many students (past and present) either dancing in or supporting Harlm Hafla is my fondest dance memory. Their feedback let me know that we're on the right track. It was such a unique experience. We will be doing it again, each year!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Observe the class, first. See if you like the teaching style and activities. Decide upon your goals (fitness, performing, learn a new skill, activity partners) and discuss those goals with the teacher. Also, see if the level of structure and format are right for you. If their teaching style is in alignment with your own goals and learning style, that could be a good fit for you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
They should think about whether they can be consistent. It's the way people learn. Do observe the class and decide if the teaching style is what you need. All other questions flow from there.
