Moorice C. says, ""From zero forehand to two forehands!" I had always been interested in playing tennis but never had the chance to start until my adult years. Starting from scratch, Coach Ken taught me and helped me improve my forehand in just one session. He possesses an incredible skill in observing and fine-tuning my strokes, enabling me to correct my form with every session. His feedback proved invaluable in boosting my confidence in my own abilities and strengthening my weaknesses. As I am ambidextrous, Coach Ken recommended that I try switching between left and right forehands, which has given me an incredible advantage on the court and complements my playing style perfectly. I cannot recommend Coach Ken enough; he has shaped me into the tennis player I am today, and I eagerly look forward to continuing to work with him. If you are ready to invest in reaching your peak tennis form, I wholeheartedly encourage you to consider Coach Ken." Read more

Your Tennis Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do tennis lessons cost?

On average, tennis lessons cost $60 to $150 per hour or $200 to $500 for five 1-hour lessons. The cost to hire a tennis instructor depends on their experience level and the session length. Casual or beginner students may not need an instructor with a lot of experience, while students who want to play at a professional level will have to pay more for an experienced teacher. Most tennis lessons are 30 to 60 minutes long.

How many tennis lessons do I need?

How many tennis lessons you need depends on your experience level and why you're taking lessons. Casual players may only need 5 to 10 lessons total. Competitive players may need 50 to 100 lessons over the course of a year, or about 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Are tennis lessons worth it?

Tennis lessons are worth it whether you're a beginner or a professional for the following reasons:

  • They're fun and educational.
  • Almost anyone can improve their game by taking them.
  • They provide heart-healthy exercise.
  • They improve hand-eye coordination.
  • They help you master a skill that you will continue to enjoy for the rest of your life.

In order for beginners to enjoy tennis and feel proficient, they first have to master the basic techniques like serving and backhand strokes. More experienced players may benefit from learning advanced techniques and improve their enjoyment of the game. One-on-one instruction allows players to concentrate on their unique strengths and weaknesses and improve their skills.

What age do you start tennis lessons?

The best age to start tennis lessons for kids is between 5 to 10 years old, or when they are able to pay attention and follow instructions for 30 minutes or more. Kids who have been in other sports before typically do well, even at a young age. Adults can start tennis lessons at any age.

What do I wear to a tennis lesson?

Since you will be moving your arms and running during a tennis lesson, wear comfortable clothing or active wear. Public courts and parks do not require a dress code, but tennis clubs and country clubs typically require the following attire:

  • Tennis shoes or sneakers with non-marking soles
  • Polo shirts or tank top
  • Shorts or a skirt
  • A hat or visor

What are the different types of tennis lessons?

There are three different types of tennis lessons, each with different advantages:

  • Group lessons are best for beginners. Learning in a group also helps students learn from each other and become familiar with game play, rules, and techniques.
  • One-on-one lessons are helpful for more advanced students. Once students master the basics, they may want to take private lessons, which are the best way to strengthen skills and set personal goals.
  • Specialized lessons are great for people with special needs. These classes adapt lessons appropriately for groups or individuals with special needs.

How do I choose a tennis instructor?

Start by searching our list of tennis instructors, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates from tennis instructors to compare.
  • Examine reviews from previous or current students on Lessons and Google.
  • Choose an experienced, friendly instructor.
  • Follow a payment schedule instead of making large cash payments up front.

What questions should I ask tennis instructors?

To find the best tennis instructor near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been playing tennis? Have you played professionally?
  • Do you have any openings? If not, how far in advance are you booked?
  • Would you recommend group or private lessons for me?
  • Do you offer discounts for referrals or couples?
  • Will you give me an estimate for lessons in writing?

As a beginner level tennis player, my main concern was to be trained both physically and mentally to understand and endure the game. I was impressed by the customized program Sergei put together for me. Not only is he exceptionally knowledgeable about the physical exercises fit for every body type or age, he has been able to completely mentally prepare me for a tennis match and teach me the understanding of the game. His experience in physical therapy definitely helped me have confidence that I won’t hurt myself in practices, in fact, he has been very delicate and determined to help me improve my physical qualities and my performance. Sergei is very skilled in injury prevention and recovery. His experience with tennis equipment was absolutely helpful too! From picking the right size and weight racket to recommending the right strings, he was willing to help me choose my first tennis racket. Sergei is a determined to help his players succeed. He’s polite, always on time! He will push you to work hard but he will also know your limits better than yourself! Truly, the perfect coach for all level players.

Coach Ken is the best tennis coach I’ve trained with. Since my time on the high school tennis team, I have received coaching from various people. Undoubtedly, I have seen the most rapid improvement in myself after learning from Coach Ken. He taught me new techniques at our first lesson together. Admittedly, I was reluctant to change my continental grip and forehand stroke because of the training I’ve previously received. However, after giving his recommendations a shot (no pun intended), I see that my shots have greatly improved! In a way that I didn’t think was possible— including a one-hand backhand! What stands out about Coach Ken is his ability to provide real-time feedback consistently throughout the lesson. From correcting my grip, to each step of my stroke, to the shift in body weight throughout. It is like his mind is always analyzing each hit. This feedback allows me to actively integrate changes from the beginning to the end of the lesson. I’m looking forward to more lessons with Coach Ken and seeing the improvement in my tennis game. I have recommended him to my family and friends. If you are looking for an experienced committed tennis coach, then I highly recommend Coach Ken!

Coach Isis has brought my game to another level. I have been a competitive tennis player for a while and have had a variety of coaches. Coach Isis has been the best by far. She has been able to quickly see my bad habits that my other coaches did not see and work on changing them. She makes me not only work hard on the court but off the court as well. Coach Isis has me think about what I’ve learned and what I need to work and write everything down. She demands hard work and motivation. Coach Isis wants to see me succeed and is a positive influence on my game and
