Your jiu jitsu questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do jiu-jitsu classes cost?

The average cost of jiu-jitsu classes is $50 to $200 per month, depending on the class age range, number of classes per week, your commitment or contract length, and the instructor's expertise and reputation. Jiu-jitsu gyms and academies are more expensive if they have well-known instructors who are national champions on staff.

In addition to the monthly class or gym fee, you'll have extra costs for gis and belts. A jiu-jitsu gi costs $60 to $120 on average, while belts cost $15 to $30. Some gyms also charge a fee for belt promotion. However, this is frowned upon by reputable academies and is often considered a warning sign of a low-quality gym.

What is jiu-jitsu?

Jiu-jitsu is a self-defense martial art based on grappling and ground control, focusing on the skill of taking your opponent to the ground and wrestling for a dominant position. jiu-jitsu uses the principles of leverage, pressure, grip, timing, and angles to subdue your opponent.

Jiu-Jitsu classes provide:

  • A fun and exciting way to improve your fitness
  • Increased focus and concentration

Where did jiu-jitsu originate?

Japanese martial arts expert Mitsuyo Maeda was the first to bring grappling and groundwork-focused jiu-do demonstrations to other countries. In 1914, Carlos Gracie became one of Maeda's first Brazilian students. Carlos and his brother Hélio Gracie, along with fellow students Luis França and Oswaldo Fadda, later went on to develop Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Is jiu-jitsu good for self-defense?

Is jiu-jitsu dangerous?

Though jiu-jitsu is a contact sport, when practiced with proper technique and form it is safer than many other martial arts because it doesn't focus on striking your opponent with punches and kicks. In statewide competitions, jiu-jitsu resulted in fewer injuries than judo, Taekwondo, mixed martial arts, or traditional wrestling.

Where can I find the best jiu-jitsu classes near me?

  • Look for a reputable academy that focuses on jiu-jitsu rather than a mixed martial arts gym.
  • Research the instructors' competition record and reputation.
  • Read academy and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the academy offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the academy in person to confirm it is clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free day or week-long trial membership to ensure the school is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask jiu-jitsu academies?

  • Do you offer a free trial class?

  • How many students are in a typical class?
  • What is the instructor's lineage and competition record?
  • What kind of uniform is required? Do you offer no-gi classes?
  • Do your students and instructors compete regularly?
  • Do you charge for belt promotions?
  • How often do you clean your mats?

The first thing I love about working with Drew is that he’s super patient. I don’t feel like he ever gets frustrated with me during our training sessions being that I’m a newbie. I also love that he challenges me and pushes me and I always end the session feeling like I’ve grown a little and learned something new. He’s helping me to build confidence in my technique, I can see my growth, and always feel like I get a great workout. I feel like I get challenged physically and mentally working with Drew . He’s also an all around good guy . I’ll definitely be training with him for the long haul as I know that my time and money are going to the kind of workouts you get results from.

While staying true to formal and traditional Japanese Jujitsu techniques, Sensei Dino Blanche at the Laughing River Dojo supplements these techniques with a thorough knowledge and implementation of attitudes one should cultivate, and be aware of, to successfully facilitate said techniques. These attitudes are coupled with the knowledge of the movements and characteristics of simple machines to aid in a fluid, but structured, technical execution. Dino Sensei also introduces unique and lesser known techniques into the traditional training to ensure the training is robust, captivating, and above all fun. During the last six years I have been training with Sensei Dino, I have noticed a increase in flexibility, personal and spatial awareness, and overall mindfulness. All of this while learning physical and mental techniques which aid to my personal protection and and the protection of those around me. My son, who once suffered from asthma before and while training with Sensei Dino, has benefited greatly from the increased activity as well as the breathing techniques introduced during training at the Laughing River Dojo. The meditative sessions aided him in relaxing, breathing, and reflection to manage his ailment, while offering me a method to coach and comfort him during times of distress. During the last six years of training, along with management of his ailment to the point of eradication, I have seen my son grow with confidence and strength not seen in too many other teens. I believe that the training at Laughing River Dojo with Dino Sensei, along with the both of us training together is greatly responsible for his development thus far, as well will be responsible for his continued progress.
